Windows 8.1 - Get it where, exactly?

Postposted on Thu Oct 17, 2013 1:57 pm

This is frustrating - Unless I have missed something I can't find a link to purchase a download or physical disk of Windows 8 for here in the UK? Microsoft's site at this moment in time just directs you to retailers that have it pre-installed. Thats no good to me because it needs to find it's way into my gaming PC in sig (still on W7), and for my MBP too.

Any ideas? None of my go-to retailers even have physical media for W8 that I can just patch to 8.1. Ty peeps.

It is not yet available as a stand-alone, you should just get a Win8 upgrade (or full version), install that, then just visit the Windows Store and install Win8.1 update. I dunno what version you need but this link for Win8 still works for me:

You could also just stick with 7...

Good advice - there's absolutely no good reason to upgrade to Win8 unless some development tools you use requires it OR you're planning on buying and playing DX11.1 games like BF4 (which do have performance benefits from using that).

I like the faster startup/shutdown/wake up. Under the hood improvements aren't bad either.

Link above is on some re-direct for the UK - I can't even buy Windows 8 as a download like you used to. Sigh. I will wait, but I have my reasons for wanting to use it. On my PC, mainly because it boot's and sleeps super fast and I am used to (and like) the tiles as I have a Lumia 800 mobile phone for the last 2 years. It (now) can also boot straight to desktop with a start button! I also have BF:4 on pre-order in Origin.

As for the MBP, I live in hope that it will sip it's precious battery power as frugally as OS X does. The much faster boot time is also welcomed again...?

This store doesn't work for you either?

As for "faster boot times" - just get a good SSD drive. I don't notice any boot time difference between freshly installed Win7 and Win8 when using my Crucial drives, and they aren't even the fastest ones available...

That link works, thanks - Emptying my wallet of £100 as I type...

...as for boot times, my gaming PC has 2 average performing M4 SSD's in RAID 0. Cocked up there because TRIM can't/won't run on RAID. I will be removing the array and using both disks separately once I get W8 on there.

I don't think the MBP will care too much, performance wise. It will always be held back by Boot Camp compared to if it was natively installed on this (pretty fast) hardware. Either way, I will know within the next hour or 2 - It's downloading the image so I can burn it to DVD.

Thanks again for helping find that link. :)
