Win98SE or Win XP

I'm building a new system this upcoming weekend. Which is a better OS overall??? I do a little bit of everything. Plus I have an existing system that runs in Win98se because my burning software requires a purchase for XP upgrade.

I switched to XP and have never looked back. The NT core is so much better than 9X. At this point I don't really think there is a choice. I just really can't see myself switching back to any 9X, and any of my friends who have switched say the same thing.

I have only one 9x box left in my room, and thats my classic box to play all those DOS games I still enjoy. Go for XP, and if you're like me, turn off as much of the eye candy as you can, it just slows you down.

fmatic, I don't follow your logic, but I would choose XP over 98. Actually I'd stick to Windows 2000, but that's another story. With all the choices in CD burning software out there, I wouldn't let that influence my OS choice.

Dude, switch to XP and make sure you have your hardrives NTFS'd.

No more BSOD's or random errors.

Except for the bloated GUI (it reminds me of teletubbies arrrrrgggg!) but you can cnahge that.

The 9x core has been dead for a awhile now. If your not going to run XP at least run Win2k. I've got a file server running win2k and my box running XP. Haven't had an issue with anything yet, even games.

Gosh, I remember back in the day when DOS 5.0 was the end all be all. 4.0 sucked ass.

hehe....go for Win 2000. forget about XP... It's the same kernel with a few mods here and there as Win 2000.

As Ricardo Dawkins stated WIN2K and XP are the same kernel, yes I agree with that. However, in the grand scheme of M$, when it comes down to it, WIN2K will become obsolete and unsupported before XP in years to come. (If it should ever come to that)

SO in that essence I would suggest XP. Just as long as your not a OS hopper that gets the newest one out.

Another vote for XP...I'd try and make sure you're getting XP Pro, and not XP Home. And make sure you turn off all the remote access garbage after you install it, too.

I would go with Win2k, I feel it's a better OS then XP (personal opinion of course) and it should be around for awhile (just look at how long NT 4.0 stuck around).

Why not just use both--that is, if you need Win98 SE for older DOS games and apps? Just set up a dual boot system and place them on seperate partitions.

Have to go XP man, I have two comps, one running ME and the new one running XP. XP wins hands down.

Why? Unless you are going to make use of the additional networking features and/or SMP, save $100 and go with XP Home.

But definitely switch to XP, although it sucks up more memory than 9x, it recognizes/uses up to 4 GB. Games like MW4 will run MUCH better on XP (trust me, I upgraded to XP just so I could play that game without it chugging)
