Problem installing Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

Fri Feb 07, 2014 1:11 pm

Hello,

Weird issue I cannot seem to find a solution. I am trying to install Windows 7 64 bit on a Q6700. Done this a million times. The PC goes really, really slow during install and never really finishes. The thing is, I can install the 32 bit version just fine. When I try to install the 64 bit, it will not finish. I have already disabled everything in the BIOS that can be. I have tried another install disc. Nothing works. Whats the deal? Anybody?

There shouldn't be much of any difference in the install process between the two, aside from the 64-bit version possibly trying to address more RAM. I would run Memtest86 overnight and see if you get any errors.

Which video card are you using?

Which mainboard and/or chipset are you using?
Is the bios up to date?

Which HD or SSD are you using along with is the bios set to AHCI?
Are you using a sata port or ide for your hd?

And yep running a memtest is a good idea.

You could also check to make sure you have your heatsink mounted properly and the fan is running etc. so you are not over heating.

Have you tried waiting a really, really long time for it to finish? When trying to install Win7 64bit on my friend's older PC it stalls for long periods of time (I don't know why), but it does eventually finish.

just brew it!

I've experienced this too. It isn't unusual for it to appear to be "stuck" at one spot for like 30 minutes. Seen it on multiple systems, no idea why it happens; but when it does it'll eventually finish if you just wait long enough.

Oof. Reinstalling windows is not fun.

Installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 on new SSD (Crucial M500 240 GB) this morning.

Made a USB install disk, installed new drive, rebooted.
Windows installer refused to install to new SSD, quoting error 'Windows is unable to install to the selected location. Error:0x80300024'
So I thought "Maybe it's because my drive is unpartitioned?" Rebooted into old install, partitioned and formatted SSD with 4K sector size. Still no good.
A little googling said the error could be due to conflicting system boot drives in the PC, so I unplugged the old SSD boot drive and retried. Still no good.
After systematically unplugging every other drive in my POC, it turned out that my USB HDD dock that I keep data files on was the culprit.
OK windows finally installed. Everything good, right? NEWP. Windows install disk didn't have drivers for my ethernet connection!
So, reboot into old windows install, find and download realtek ethernet drivers (Ew, I know).
Re-reboot into new windows installation, install drivers.
OK. Phew. Time for Office. Nothing can go wrong, right?
Except office install kept failing on me. Looking up another machine error code, turns out it didn't like that .Net was out of date.
So, update .Net.
Finally, Got a working windows 7 installation and working Office. Can't wait to see what will go wrong next...

Ok, I figured it out. I had to update my BIOS to the latest version. After that, 64-bit loaded just fine. Thanks for the help, guys.
