"W8 upgrade ver." and W7 installed. Dual Boot possible?

Postposted on Mon Mar 03, 2014 2:14 pm

Believe I've read that you can dual boot an "installed W7" with a W8upgrade.

Main concern is that I've read that I would lose all rights to my W7 license(?)

Would I still be able to get windows updates for my W7 install and also
get updates for the W8upgrade install?

I just want to explore and play around with W8.
Do NOT want to lose the W7.

I've got the W8 in a VM but the "activation need" limits what I can
do and after a while locks me out and I have do it over.

Don't know what would happen if I tried to activate the W8 VM.

Thanks,

Do a custom installation to install it from scratch using only the upgrade code. This has worked for me on Windows 7 and Windows 8.

So you have used Windows 8 on VM over 30 days and now activation kicks you out? Try that http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/wi ... prearm.htm

You don't even need any product key.

Install Windows 8 trial version in a VM instead of mucking around with dual boot stuff?

I imagine that upgrading to W8 would make your W7 license defunct.....unless you purchased an entirely separate OEM copy. Seems like more trouble than it's worth though. You can do a 90-day trial of Windows 8.1. I would strongly recommend that if you're not sure. Also keep in mind that Update 1 for Win8.1 is due out on April 8th, and that should include some more big changes.

You don't need a W7 license. Just do a clean install with the Win 8 upgrade key.

@The Egg
The 90 Free Trial seems perfect. Right now I keep getting "This site is temporarily unavailable"
when I try to sign up. Will keep trying.

Have not tried the other options mentioned here yet (except VM). More exploring to do!

Heh, don't spend too much time in W8, frustration level very high in there.
I fight with it every now and then.

Took me couple hours to make W7 and VM W8 to even see each other on the ethernet
But of course they refuse to talk to each other.
Right now that is way too much trouble to try to sort out!

thanks,

Sure you can dual-boot them. You'd need to make an install disc or an USB drive installer to host the Win 8 upgrade package though, because if you launch the installer from inside Win 7 it will simply replace it. Just boot to the Win 8 media and select a different drive or partition to install it to.
