Multimedia Keyboards

Is there any way of utilising the extra keys on multimedia keyboards in Mandrake 9.1, or any others for that matter as I change OS frequently.

Logitech may supply a driver version for theirs. Microsoft probably doesn't support it for obvious reasons.

I haven't completely hopped on the linux bandwagon yet. Due to lack of time, I'm sorta bein dragged along 'cause my shoelaces are caught in the tire spokes.

The community usually develops their own stuff for that, don't they?

I have 3 extra buttons on my keyboard and never use them, so I decided against getting one with 12 buttons just 'cause it looked cooler.

Hehe I messed up the working multimedia buttons. LOL, I don't really mind, it was good fun watching the download going at 700 KB/s... dropping to at least 400 KB/s then going up to 600 KB/s. 8)

Anybody can beat that. Hehehe cable rules. :D

If your keboard manufacturer does not provide a utility to map the special keys, you might try a program called xbindkeys.

Whenever a key is pressed, a series of 'scancodes' is returned. The special keys should be accessible with the standard keyboard driver, but the OS does not know what to do once they are pressed. This program should allow you to find out the scancodes for the special keys, and then map them to a shell script. You will have to come up with the shell script yourself - things like volume controls may be tricky, if there is not a command line interface to access the functions, but launching apps should not be too difficult.

By the way, welcome to TR ! Check out our Folding team ( http://techreport.com/etc/folding/ ) we can always use the help of new team members.
