Any way to install Ubuntu onto Intel RAID?

Thu Apr 19, 2007 8:48 pm

I have 30gigs free on my RAID 0 array (ICH8R).. is there a way to install Ubuntu onto it? I have tried 7.04 but it sees the individual drives in the array, not the actual array.

tks

That's because it is not a real RAID:

You probably need to play with dmraid to get it going.

Yeah..

OpenSUSE 10.2 sees array, installs ok, but kernel patch kills grub.. lol

I found a how-to for Ubuntu..

I know its not hardware RAID, but you would think at this stage of the game, there would be an easy way to install.. many people use onboard RAID these days.

Grub seems to be a little twitchy regarding onboard SATA in general. I recently had a bitch of a time getting Fedora Core 6 running on a SATA drive connected to the onboard SATA port of a DFI K8M800-MLVF motherboard. The installation would appear to complete normally, but when attempting to boot from the SATA drive, grub would always freeze at "stage2".

After much Googling and putzing around with grub's config files, I gave up on grub and installed LILO instead.

That doesn't help if you're trying to do software RAID though, since AFAIK LILO can't handle software RAID at all.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

For Ubuntu, you have to use the alternate cd for RAID support, IIRC.

I have the same RAID as Elmopuddy and i'm about to do a complete reinstall of Windows XP on it, but I also want to be able to dual-boot into Kubuntu. I have 2 x 250gb sata drives for my RAID 0 and I also have a 500gb sata drive installed for data and other crap. I'm not that knowledgeable about how bootloaders work and what not but i'm wondering if I would have issues if I were to install Kubuntu onto my 500gb drive and not onto the RAID? Also, could I install the bootloader onto the 500gb drive and avoid any possible RAID issues altogether? I'm about to install Windows now and hopefully I can get an answer before I try to install Kubuntu.

Yes, if you make your 500GB driver the boot drive and put the bootloader on that and Kubuntu as well, then it will never see the 250GB RAID setup.

Excellent, now I can install Kubuntu without fear and get folding going again on this box. I appreciate your help much! :)

I've decided to split the array, use one drive for each O/S..

Much easier this way lol

Thanks for the help though :)

Glad to hear it.

You might edit the OP to reflect "SATA", to avoid confusion.
