Anyone know anything about? Anyone try the beta? I've checked out their site and they don't really say anything except it's linux that runs windows programs. Does anyone know how well it runs these programs?

Lindows is just a Linux distro w/Wine integrated.
Wine is a windows emulator used by people in linux to run Windows programs and can be used in any distro.
IMO Lindows is just tryin to leach off the M$ name to sell another Linux distro that can be used the same way any other one can be. If I were you in wanting to try Linux get SuSe, ReHat, or even Mandrake all have Wine ready to go and I am sure if you hang around the Linux OS for a bit you will realize there is little need to use M$ apps.

Wine
Is
Not an
Emulator.

It's a compatability layer, more or less.

Emulation = slow, or at least slower.
Translation layers, while slower, are much faster than full emulation.

NewsForge has a review of the beta. This was posted last month on their site: http://www.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid ... ode=thread

Well, if my experience with Wine is any indication, Lindows isn't worth a damn. You can run basic stuff like calc.exe, but forget about running anything useful.

Emulator not an emulator. Was the easiest way to explain what wine was because most every1 knows what an emulator is.
Forge u anal basta'd

I'm not sure I'd call Forge anal; he's just expanding the acronym.

As to the actual topic...well, I don't know. Wine might work fine for some people (my only real experience with it has been whichever ancient build was available in Debian 'potato' 2.2...), but I think that actual emulation (bochs) or virtualization (VMware, Plex86 (well, eventually)) would be more useful.

Of course, then you have to have a license for the OS...which would completely defeat the purpose of Lindows anyway.

Wine should work pretty good for ya, specifically WineX by TransGaming. Forge pointed it out to me and it runs stuff pretty well.

I tried using WineX and did not have much luck. I could get RTCW running but could not get it "centered" on the screen but it seemed to look as good as in windows. I gave up and just used the RTCW linux point release and that worked better. I also tried Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and several other progams but did not have much success getting them running.

All your gaming is belong to WineX.

Playing the MechWarrior 4 expansion at full speed in it right now on my Linux Tinkertoy.

I really don't see Lindows taking head to head competition with Windows. Linux users use Linux to get away from Windows. Sure every now a then you might have to use a Windows program. However for the majority of Linux users this isn't enough to make a dramatic change. The same goes for Windows Users. I personally don't care which way however I'm interested in seeing how it can go against SuSe and RedHat this should be a fun little match up.

Hmm I think someone needs to explain 8)

I read the entire site, and listened to an interview with the person in charge. Basically Lindows has full compatiability with the top most used applications that are used in windows, e.g Microsoft Office, and similar programs.

They said they haven't supported games as of yet, but i reckon that when they release Lindows, and some more updates, they might start looking into game integration.

well if you guys look at the evidence for yourself before slagging of something, maybe you wouldn't be so hasty in the future.
