Hmm, my upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy went OK and I can confirm that the flash thing is definitely fixed in Gutsy, just , not sure why yours bombed out.

If you do the clone thing again, you may be able to resize and grow the partition. It depends on the filesystem you used at install, can you paste the output of "mount" if you do that.

Sorting out what options it presents at boot and whether it prompts or not is just a matter of editing /boot/grub/menu.lst

Okay, I've figured out a lot of my issues, but have run into others.

1. The Splash Screen no longer loads. I get the Nvidia screen for a second, then the beige background and the song, and it loads for up to a minute than the desktop loads. I read a 'fix' on the wiki but it didn't work for me. Anybody have any ideas? There are so many people looking for help at the Ubuntuforums that my questions never get answered. I don't know if my issue has to do with the screen resolution or not. My screen is 1680x1050 and there is NO vga code that I've been able to find. So I assign a different one for the splash, but I still get nothing.

Here is the Fix I used:
if your system is booting slowly or your ubuntu splash screen is not being displayed it could be that Usplash has created the splash screen incorrectly

1) edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

At the very end of the kernel line after "splash" , add

"vga=***"

replace *** with the code from the table below that corresponds with the resolution and colour setting you are using

the line should look something like this:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=20fd9912-6383-4860-9cd8-88a11909d715 ro quiet splash vga=791

Save that file, close it,

2) edit /etc/usplash.conf

sudo gedit /etc/usplash.conf

change the resolution to the one you set in the previous step save and close

3) rebuild the bootsplash screen

sudo update-initramfs -u -k `uname -r`

This rebuilds the image that Grub uses to start the system.

4) reboot

You should pick one of the standard resolutions that your screen can display, even though it might not be the optimal one, it just needs to be one supported by your screen, your graphics card and usplash.

First of all thanks for the help.

My screen can display 1680x1050 which is what I have it set for, and is also compatible with my graphics card. Unfortunately not with Usplash... but I'll try setting it to one of the others to see if it changes anything.

As for the Nvidia splash, does it matter where I put that code? Just at the end of the device sections? Or under the Nvidia input device?

Whoa. I changed the screen to 1024x768 and on this 22" screen everything looks a bit distorted and BIG... but I'll give it a shot.

Any other thoughts on how I might speed boot up? I walked through the sysv-rc-conf and turned off some things, but still looking to get at least a comparable boot speed to my XP drive.

Edit: Rebooted with my 22" Widescreen on 1024x768 and still no splash while loading.

Just to be clear (I could be the one confused) the splash I am missing is this one:

Ah, that's not usplash, usplash is the progress bar during loading so ignore everything we said earlier about usplash.

That splash is part of the Gnome startup, I'm not that up on Gnome, so not sure if that is controlled by some options.
