The Gentoo LiveCD/DVD 2008.0_beta1 has been released!

In other news, Gentoo plans move to RPM.

Yup. We considered the popular .deb format, but ultimately decided to go with RPM, since RPM packages tend to be smaller, easier to work with (especially for dependency tracking), and are used more widely. There are more packages available as RPMs than as .debs, so users can continue to enjoy the wide selection of packages available in Portage once we finish moving to RPM. Not to mention the LSB favors RPM more than any other format.

On a more serious note, if you're interested in testing and installing the latest beta release, we need feedback on what doesn't work and what does. Please be sure to search our existing bugs before reporting, though. Reports are starting to trickle in, so it's possible we already know about the issue.

Yup, I'm going to try it out on my new notebook. Okay, it's actually really old, but that's why Linux is going to be the way to go on this thing. I'll be sure to report any problems.

I'm posting from the notebook now. It actually started up quicker than the XP Home on this thing. Awesome! And the LiveCD is actually more functional than the last LiveCD. I think anyway. I remember the last one frustrated me a lot so I just used it for the command line install stuff. I'll have to try the graphical installer once I get all of my friend's stuff off the hard drive.
