PCLinuxOS

Sun May 04, 2008 10:01 am

About a week ago I decided I would try out Linux. I found a bunch of recommendations for PCLinuxOS and so I decided I'd download it. I got the ISO and burned it to a CD with ImgBurn and did the verification thing and it said all was fine and so I turned off my computer, rebooted it, booted into the live CD and opened the installer. It had no trouble (it's installed on an external USB hard drive), but when it gets to the networking portion it freezes up every time, whether I select Ethernet (we're running Fast Ethernet) or Wireless (802.11b).

What do I do? Would trying another distro help?

It wouldn't hurt to burn an Ubuntu ISO and boot with that, just to see.

Ubuntu 8.04 is probably the most user friendly and feature filled linux distro you can get. I like it a lot.

It would also be good to know what NIC you are using.

I have the ISO already... I'm burning it now.

It's an integrated NIC; I'm on a (Toshiba) laptop. The Ethernet is a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC and the Wireless is by an Atheros A5005G chip.
