Ubuntu won't boot

Postposted on Sun May 11, 2008 10:17 pm

All the hype around here lately motivated me to put Ubuntu on my other, older computer. It's a Sempron system, so not too old. I installed from the Live CD, and everything is fine until I try to log into the system. When I enter the username and password, the screen shuts off, then comes back on again and I'm back to the login screen. This happens no matter the GUI. Failsafe GNOME works fine, though.

Any ideas why this is happening?

Might be video driver wonkiness. If the X Window system is crashing during startup of your desktop environment, this will send it back to the login screen.

What is in your ~/.xsession-errors file?

BTW, the title is slightly misleading.

It seems there's some incompatibility between the renderer and the ATi graphics that're built into the mobo. What BS. I'll try to fix it, and update this thread with what I find.

What would a better thread title be?

Did you check DAAMIT's site for newer Linux drivers?

Check out your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (try pressing ctrl+alt+f1 to bring up a console, login there, type 'sudo nano /etc/X11/xor.conf' without the quotes)

In the "device" section of that file, you might want to try "vesa" and see what happens.

Also, make sure that the "screen" section contains only the resolutions that your monitor supports (perhaps it lists very high resolutions like 2048x1536 or something...)
