Ubuntu 9.04 x64 Sound

I just installed x64 9.04 on my desktop here and i'm having issues getting the sound working. I have a GA-MA790X-UD4P and I'm using the onboard Realtek audio and can't seem to get it working. I have a suspicion that the digital output (optical) that i am using is causing the issue. Any ideas?

I've got 9.04 x64 running on a number of boxes and the sound works on them, so it's not a base problem with the OS. All of my sound is analogue out though, not digital. Open up Volume Control->Preferences and ensure you have "IEC958" selected so it shows up as an option (usually a checkbox) and then enable that option.

Did what you prescribed with no luck. I'm not quite sure what might be causing this. I have the analog cables so i might just try them.

Definitely give the analogue path a shot it is more likely to work out of the box than the digital. I expect the digital will work if you can just find the right option to enable it somewhere, but I'm not too experienced in playing around with the sound stuff.

No experience with Ubuntu and digital out here either. But you don't happen to have a second sound card installed, do you? I've had some odd issues with audio on Ubuntu when multiple soundcards are present; it seems to confuse Pulseaudio.

So I switched out and tried the analog cables and it still didn't work right off the bat. Had to check some more channels in audio pref to get all the sound that I wanted. (Sorry, should have mentioned I have Z-5450's 5.1) Everything seems to be working fine now though. So for a summary, I'm now running them on analog with all six speakers working just fine. Thanks for the help guys.
