Samba service didn't start

I upgraded a copy of "Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS" and rebooted over the weekend. I call samba and fah on startup from within /etc/rc.local - has worked no problems. This time, folding started but samba did not. Any ideas?

I was able to start samba manually from the command line and all of my mapped drives now appear (under windoz).

Ran into this myself, it sounds like your problem as well. Pretty major regression if you ask me.

Edit: can't believe I'm contributing info here among the land of all Linux gerbils around here :o Someone must have posted this info here before?

Flying Fox - thx for the info. Just rebooted today. The manual restart worked fine.
sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart
(will make it easier to find next time as I don't reboot very often)

by just brew it!
Guess I missed this thread when it first popped up.

Did you install Samba through Ubuntu's package manager? If so, it should start automatically on bootup (no need to add it to rc.local). I've only seen issues like this before when the package was installed manually...

My install of samba came from one of the guides at smallnetbuilder.com:
sudo apt-get install samba
sudo apt-get install smbfs
Is this a manual install?

I found the command listed in the link easier to remember:
sudo service samba restart

No, that should've set it to start automatically. Not sure why it isn't.

The bug is that smbd runs, but nmbd does not by the time the startup process is complete (forgot if it runs and then crashes out or nmbd just does not run). Apparently just restarting the whole samba "service" will have both of them running again.

This bug was fixed in the package samba - 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.3

what version of samba are you using?

having this problem with my ubuntu box as well. running 9.10. i need to restart samba each time i login. and i thought i was doing something wrongly. :-?

on a side note, i'm wondering if there's an issue with gnome on 9.10 with the intel atom hardware. i had trouble installing it on my eee pc and an atom box i setup as a storage server. the interface would lockup everytime i clicked a menu and you'd see it get stuck when the menu faded in. i always needed to do a hard reset after that. the eee pc runs fine now with gnome but i had to keep the atom box (an atom 330) running in gnome failsafe mode, otherwise the lockups would occur. tried all manner of updates and i don't see anything on google to indicate that there's something incompatible between ubuntu 9.10 and the atom chip. never had an issue with prior versions of ubuntu.

Might actually be an incompatibility between the Compiz visual effects and the video driver. Try disabling visual effects in System -> Preferences -> Appearance.

I don't think it's a problem with the atom chip itself, I've got a customer with 70 9.10 LTSP clients running fine with atom 330s on 945 mobos. (did have to disable the boot spash screen to get them to boot reliably though, but then they are foxconn boards  )

Did previously try that. Didn't work. It still locked up.

Wouldn't think it would be the atom chip itself, given there are so many netbook/nettops out there that run linux. I have the same board, and I'm wondering if it's dodgy, just no way to verify it as it seems to run everything else just fine.
