Oil Rush for Linux

Just a heads up. I've been playing around with the game Oil Rush for Linux for a bit. Not bad. It's meant to demo the unigine engine. However, since it's cross platform and works in Linux (YAY) I thought I would share. Right now they are running a pre-order the latest version is 0.63 and you can download the latest update and receive the final game if you pre order.

Yeah I would say so considering that not too many games go for that price and you are assuring development for not just Windows and Mac but Linux too. I always support development for quality on Linux.

Oil Rush released a couple of days ago if anyone wants to know. It's a TWIMTBP game so in Linux anyway it runs great on my 460.

I just got it last night and tried it out (on Arch Linux). It looks like a fun game with a little bit of a different twist on the RTS genre. The graphics are VERY nice and I'm happy to see a high-quality game that has a native Linux client. Oh... 64-bit native executablest too. :wink:

Oh and $20... money very well spent for something of this quality. There's lots of crap out there for $60 that isn't as good.

...not that 64-bit native support is all that critical, given that backward compatibility with 32-bit executables is pretty good provided you've got the 32-bit runtime installed.

I fully agree and most of the games I play are 32bit under Wine so that's obviously an option. A good number of the HumbleBundle games and Oil Rush do include native 64 bit clients, and I try to use those when I can just to give the CPU and GPU a workout.

Yup for the price, the graphics are some of the best I've seen, especially in Linux. I think the acting could be a little better but other than that no complaints.

Hmm, considering it runs in Linux I wonder if it could be included as a benchmark. I wouldn't mind being able to buy AMD hardware in Linux, but for whatver reason they just don't give the same love as Nvidia does here. A benchmark widely used might force AMD to fix the issues that have plaugued it for years. Performance of the Nvidia drivers between Win vs Lin are virtually identical.... not so with AMD they always lag a little bit by 10 FPS or so.

I've heard that it will run OK with the newer Catalyst drivers, but you are SOL with open-source drivers since they are just beginning to support OpenGL 3.0 and this game requires at least OGL 3.0. I'm by no means using a high-end system (almost 4 year old e8400 + Nvidia GT 8800 graphics), but the game plays fine at 1920x1200 with medium settings. I know I'm missing out on the fancier features like tesselation that are available on OpenGL 4+ cards. Next year is the year of the great upgrade and I'll keep this game around to see how the new graphics do.
