One of the things that drives me nuts with Debian is that instead of doing graphical sudo (getting admin privs using an admin-level user's password) it requires the root password for things like running Synaptic. After searching high and low I found a solution that works, at least on GNOME 2.x and MATE.

sudo update-alternatives --set libgksu-gconf-defaults /usr/share/libgksu/debian/gconf-defaults.libgksu-sudo
sudo update-gconf-defaults
