There is a handy shortcut I just found out about recently. Ctrl+H in the file manager unhides hidden folders temporarily.

Now, if only I knew how to open a path like in Windows, where you click on the address bar, and type the long path in, if you want to.

That's probably what you want.

you might also like to install nautilus-open-terminal it gives you a right click option to open the dir you're looking at in a file browser in a terminal window.

nautilus-open-terminal is so wonderful.

In other news, I tried out xubuntu this weekend. Never again.
