How is your farm organized?

Sun Aug 04, 2002 1:36 am

Since yarbo threw this topic up before the great forum upheaval, I thought it appropriate to bring it back since he mentioned me so nicely :).

Pics for my farm will be forthcoming, but appreciate that my farm is running at 4 different locations since, there is no way I could have 20+ processors in one room and still look like I do anything else. Asthetics count for something, and I need room for modding cases :).

So I thought I'd give a quick processor breakdown by location:

My room:
Has my farm, as listed in my sig

Upstairs in my house:
Has a Dual 533 box thats the house common LAN box

Next door neighbor:
Celery 1.8 and Athlon 1.4

Client 1:
Duron 750
Celeron 900/400/766/733/466
VIA C3-800

Client 2:
Athlon 1.13
Celeron 1.8

Client 3:
Duron 1.1/1.1/1

That's it so far. More to come :).

Athlon 1800+ and P4 2.26 are coming soon when I get my budget strait :lol:
My tiny farm is in my signiture, and also I really dont think I should run the PII250 and the Pentium 150 because they take almost 2 weeks for 1 WU. :oops:

They are all in my air-conditioned basement 28c :P
AMD Athlon 64 FX-51, ASUS Radeon 9800XT, SK8V mobo, 1gb 3200 Corsair XMS Registered, Audigy2 ZS Plat., 36.7wd raptor, 160 Barracuda 7200.7, Antec Performance Plus1080, Nec dvd +/- burner, 16x dvd, etc woohoo!

Oh, boy. My farm's changed quite a bit since last I posted about it so here goes...

At home:
Living room - Athlon XP 1800+, Pentium 4 1.6A, Pentium 166MMX (trying to run Genome but all it gets is Folding WU's)
Bedroom - Pentium !!! 850

At work:
8 Pentium 4 2.0A
4 Pentium !!! 1GHz
3 Pentium !!! 800MHz
2 Pentium !!! 900 notebooks
2 Pentium !!! 650 notebooks
1 dual Pentium II 400
And until recently 6 1.7GHz P4 notebooks.

Now that I have a copper cooler on my XP I shouldn't have to throttle it back when the weather warms up... :)

ok, right now i have a loft bed with a desk under it. on teh desk i have my stereo equipment, a receiver, cd player, and dvd player with my laptop on top of it. to it's right, i have a desktop case (p2 300) with my 17inch iiyama monitor on it. to it's right, i have a mouse, linxcel usb kvm, and sidewinder controller. to the left of the stereo is a 5 port netgear switch. under my desk, i have 3 towers, 2 p2 233's (neither are online, but i fold on one and plug it in every few days to submit wu's. and i have my athlon xp 1800+.

i only have one monitor, and 3 keyboards laying out (sometimes one of the p2's doesn't like rerecognizing the usb stuff).

new hardware coming soon:
8 port switch
2 more 17 inch monitors :) (my neighbor is giving me one for finding files for him on his old computer, and my dad got one for $30 at work that he's bringing home)
possibly another p2 300 :) if no one claims them at my dad's work (he bought another one for me a few months ago)
and i might build my mom a new computer for her work (with an athlon xp that would fold 24/7 and i'd adopt her p3 500)

fortunately, on september 14th, i'm moving back to college and get free electricity!

and at the girlfriend's house i'm running folding on: p3 733 (~15 hours a day), and a p1 100mhz
i was running on my friends 1.2 ghz thunderbird, but they had to reformat recently so i'll ask him again
to summarize:
axp 1.53
p3 1.0
p3 .733
p3 .5
p2 .3
p2 .233
p2 .233
p1 .1
~4.63 ghz, and possibly 4.93 in a week

My farm is all in one room till I get a job... It gets kind of warm
Gollum = Client 1 = 450MHz K6-3
Zelazny = Client 2 = 450MHz K6-3
Lanczos = Client 3 = 700MHz Slot-A
Godel = Client 4 = 900MHz Slot-A
Merlin = Clients 5,6 = 2x1.2GHz Palaminos
http://personal.palouse.net/billshan/ghost.htm
I get ATT broadband split out with a DI-704P gateway and a POS 4-port hub for the slowest 3 connections. Gollum is used a family member and gets its own KVM set. Zelazny, Lanczos, and Godel share a second KVM set via an IOGEAR MiniView SE model GCS84A 4-port KVM switch. Merlin is my personal rig and has a dedicated KVM set.

Well if we're mentioning pipes here's how it stands.

My room, upstairs, and next door are currently hooked into a DSL connection. Both houses have them and since we ran conduit between the places I'm working on aggregating the connections for a bigger pipe.

Client 1 has DSL, Clients 2 and 3 only have 56k modems for now, but they're upgrading to their own DSL soon.

Howard:

How's the dialup working for the clients?

I'm faced with losing DSL temporarily due to a move...we're moving in with the Out-Laws :o while a contractor renovates our house.

I've arranged for another DSL guy to "babysit" my folding boxen in his basement...running of course. :D

internet sharing:
i have a 50ft cable running to my mom's room where she has a dell p3 500 mhz that she got from her old job. i added a second nic, and she has one nic going to sbc global dsl (which sucks), and one going to my room. she's running vdhcp and analogx proxy, which usually lets wu's through after a couple tries

So far not too bad, they're connected to a Win2k box running ICS with on-demand dialing. So it may take 2 or 3 tries, but it goes through. I want all my boxes on DSL though.

Hey I got a power meter from a friend so I can monitor watts drawn on my wall socket. Here is a table of numbers that is rather interesting. PC's are running SETI or Folding@Home
PC or......Individual......Cumulative
Monitor......Watts..........Watts
-----------------------------------------------
Base 1 =....................40
MonitorA =......106....146
Merlin =........204......350
MonitorB =......95.....445
Zelazny =.......95.....540
Base 2 =........18......558
Godel =........ 142.....700
Lanczos =.......90......790
MonitorC =......80......870
Gollum =.........60......930
-Godel =.......-140......790
-Lanczos =....-110......680
-Monitor B =....-95......585
-Zelazny =......-70......515
-Monitor C =....-80.....435
-Gollum =........-66.....369
-Monitor A =...-107.....262
-Merlin =........-204.......58
Monitor A =.....107......165
Merlin =..........204......369

Merlin is the 1.2GHz Palamino duallie = 2xF@H
Godel = 900MHz Slot-A lots of fans to cool hot aluminum case = F@H
Lanczos = 700MHz Slot-A = F@H
Zelazny = 450MHz K6-3 = F@H
Gollum = 450MHz K6-3 = Seti@H
Monitor C = 17" Hitachi
Monitors A and B are 19" Hitachi

These are all fully loaded running Seti or Folding. The wattage for each PC did not seem to vary whether loading the CPU or not. This surprised me. Seti seemed to pull more watts than Folding at Home. Neither pulled more than about 10 watts extra load.

I know many of you have seen this before but here it is again. I have my pharm at home organized in racks. You can see the layout on my web site.

I also have a few machines at my work crunching along shown at the bottom of my page. (except the LCD based SBC)
