I would think the 64bit 'nix and switching between operating systems would be a pain in the butt. If it works good for you, cool.

The SMP WUs I've been getting are the 2651, '52, and '53. The 2651 and '53 are 1760 points with a four day deadline. IIRC, my e4400 C2D @ 2.0GHz ran them at about 1100 PPD. So you should be able to make deadlines with time to spare while only folding 50% of the time.
The 2652 is 1148 points with a three day deadline. They run slower (fewer PPD) than the '51 and '53, but will probably also make deadlines while folding 50% of the time.

Yep, I agree with Nitrodist. If you are getting regular "FILE_IO_ERROR" failures it's generally an indication your overclock isn't 100% stable under the load of folding.

After your reply I noticed you are running your memory at 2:3 with a 20% overclock. The SMP client seems to work the memory pretty hard on a dual core cpu system. At 2:3 your memory is waiting for something to do for more than 30% of the time, but is still clocking over spec and probably running fairly hot. Maybe try backing it down to 880MHz?

P.S. IIRC, drfish was plagued by "FILE_IO_ERROR"s during the BBQ Showdown with Leor. I don't recall if he ever resolved the issue completely, but a thread search and/or a PM to him might give you some things to try.


news edit: Yesterday we went from heatwave to chilly. I switched my AXP Sempron 2400 @ 2.0GHz with a 46% finished 500 point big packets WU over to TRFrankenbot. It's currently at 70% finished and 164 PPD. It will continue running 24/7 for the next few days and then a combination of night folding and 24/7 as the weather allows.

I could accept that, except for the fact that it only occurs on client startup, when it hasn't even started to do anything yet. And my system is orthos stable forever, which puts a whole lot more load on the cpu (as far as heat is concerned it gets at least 10° hotter). As I said before once it starts going its fine. A quick google search reveals others with the same issue too so I really haven't got a clue why it's behaving that way.

Well it's running in VMware...so no having to switch.

What I actually did was just dl the diskless boot cd from notfred and am running that as the virtual machine. Woohoo!

Well, I just logged a SMP unit into the 12PM update today. Mwhahaha!

According to FahMon I've got 1275 ppd, and it's just about ready to pop it's first full workunit (woohoo!)

I'm not used to FAH, but it sure doesn't look like we're making much progress...

After Halloween, you can switch over to UnitedGerbilNation and then you will see some real progress!

Those SMP WUs are doing wonders to people's ppds.

If you are a serious Folder you really need to upgrade to these new fangled dual cores and work on those SMP WUs.

I restarted all of my machines for Frankenbot, Im not sure if you will be able to tell which WU are coming from me

but heres what I added

a Q6600 @ 3.0
a PS3
a Celeron @ 2.6
and a P4m @2.2

so they should all start turning in work soon

My machine actually set an alarm off this morning (Good thing I didn't have the speakers on!) ..... It was beeping when I got up so I just turned it off and left....

The CPU hit 62c!!, I've been running this thing rock solid for about 6 months, and it's never gone over 60c..... I'll say one thing, my electric bill will probably go up this month!! Pretty Sure that SMP version pounds the snot out of your machine (As it Should!) If you have any doubts about stability run this for a few days

Anyway.... I lowered the clocks to 245x12 (below 3Ghz (dammit Man)), and took the 3.3% volatage increase off the CPU.... Oh yeah!! I turned the A/C back on too....

Orthos has been running for almost an hour at these setting, so I'm gonna turn it off and fire the SMP version back up!!

I really can't believe it hit 62c!! I'm starting to think I quit tweakin a little too soon, and it may have been a memory problem that I was blameing on the CPU!!

I noticed my memory modules look identical to the DDR500 ones, except the timings are 3-4-4-4-8 instead of 2-2-2-2-5..... Hmmmm, mabey 11x275 isn't out the question!!

THAT'S IT!!! I'm Re-Tweaking..........

I'll make sure I'm folding for Franky before I got to bed!

FWIW the smp client runs about 20º cooler than this.

Should it be throttling already? Or it only does at 100ºC?

I have a feeling that the actual temperature is probably about 15° cooler than what TAT is showing. I should get it up to 100° to see if it throttles at that temperature.

My B3 Q6600 runs in he low 70's at 3.0GHz

Maybe it's just my chip, but it seems to get a little flakey when it goes over 60c.... So I don't let it!!

Anyway the new settings worked fine, and my high temp so far has been 53c. Been SMP folding since last night!

Looks like were making some progress now!!
