Thinking about buying a Dual 3.2 Xeon server for Folding

Wed Oct 31, 2007 2:39 pm

Found this on another forum

Supermicro X5DA8 + 2x 3.2GHz/512K/1MB Xeons ('Gallatin')
6GB PC2100 Reg. ECC (Board Takes 12GB)
Leadtek GF6800 Ultra OC Dual DVI (This particular variety mods perfectly to QuadroFX 4000, which is why I've kept it in here)
M-Audio Audiophile 2496
(2) 18GB Seagate X15-36LP 15K SCSI (Dual Onboard U320 Channels)
(2) 200GB + 500GB 7200 RPM
PCI-X Firewire 800 Adapter
Samsung 16X DVD-R+RAM+Lightscribe
Plextor UltraPlex 40Max (SCSI)
6 Channel Zallman Fan Control, Thermalright Heatpipes on CPUs, NV5 on Video, Sanyo Denki & Panaflo fans
Antec TP2.0 550W EPS PSU
Customized 4U SGI Rackmount case w/ ball bearing rails and/or Antec 1080AMB

Its obviously a last gen system, but its the procs that got me excited. Im thinking it would be quite the SMP monster, but Im not sure, what kind of PPD do you think I could get out of something like that?

Gallatin is a P4 Xeon. :o You definitely don't want it.
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

Can't SMP utilize the other physical processor?

Yeah, it works over multi-processors just like multi-core. Obviously you lose the benefits of shared cache, but I bet it's not that different.

(For example, look at this review. The 248's are a pair of single-core opterons @ 2.2ghz while the 175 is a single dual-core opteron @ 2.2ghz.)
