Copy and paste in the new forums with truncated URLs FTL.

Use this:

You forgot to do Step 8 from Tarx's guide, which was to install the 32-bit libraries. From the command line, type the following:

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

I did that. I'll do it again though. *sigh*

Oh, the command didn't work because I didn't enter the password.

I don't know the password

THANKS!!!

Now I just have to figure out how to resize the memory. It's only using 247 MB... Then I copy the entire ubuntu folder, run config again for SMP, change machine ID, and have two SMP clients running!

Looking sweet! Congrats! Go through the config file and look for the memory size allocation.. it's difficult to miss.

Just make sure you pull up the Windows Task Manager set the processor affinity for each virtual machine.

How much performance can we gain from that? I would just leave it alone.

So what was the password? vmware or ubuntu?

He's running two vm's on his quad so he would need to set aside two processors per vm.

Yeah, and by running two VMs things should sort themselves out, no?

password: It was ubuntu.

Cores: I set the affinity to 2 CPUs in task manager, but looking at my core usage widget it is distributing the work to all 4 cores still.

This Linux setup seems to be running quite well. Both instances are churning through 1% every 11 minutes, tad less even.

I may need to apply this to the wife's AM2 x2 Black Edition.

Having an application constantly showing a Window could be a problem? There is always accidental closure. I hope her machine is still using XP, then you can use VMware server, configure the VM to "Power on VM on startup", and just let it run in the background (what VMware Server is designed to do). Then you can install the VMware Server Console on your machine and manage it remotely (remember the Logon window that pops up and we told you to select localhost? If you install VMware Server on the wife's machine then you enter her IP there). :)

Well I think VMServer failed on my system because it was Vista64 and has that driver signature issue.

The wife has Vista32 on her system, so VMServer might still be an option?

If not, I don't think she will mind having the window open. She hasn't even officially taken posession of the PC yet anyway. She's supposed to get a monitor from her company. Right now it is sitting under my desk, folding, and I have it connected to my VGA connector on the monitor. I just check it every now and then to make sure it is running.

I'll have to test things out with and without affinity set to see if there are differences in performance.

Re: SMP client issues

I installed VMplayer on my wife's machine tonight with ubuntu and FA@ SMP :D

It was in the middle of a WU in windows. I wasn't sure how to transfer the WU from the windows installed SMP client to the ubuntu installed SMP client. Right now the plan is to let the windows WU finish in windows, the start up ubuntu

unless someone knows a better way?

uh, what's the easiest way to reboot my system? can I hibernate the ubuntu installs, reboot vista, then bring ubuntu back up?

it's a pain getting two clients running every time I turn the system on.... this doesn't happen often, but still...
