Well, it was nice being #2 for the team for a little while, looks like JPinTO is back up and running. :)

Something strange seems to be happening with Pande Lab's team output. Suddenly they got a huge amount of points today and yesterday (the earliest one I noticed, July 9 at 9 PM, is now beyond the range of the column, but it was there before the 12 PM CDT update). They're getting something over 26,000 points per WU submitted in these updates, which is... peculiar, to put it mildly: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=1.

Looks like Stanford has created Extra Large WU's that REQUIRE 8 cores in Linux to process.

These things are worth monster bonus points if you have superfast hardware that can finish the WU's before the 4 day target. 3 day completion gets you 100% bonus. Earlier gets you even more bonus points. They've got some serious machines chewing these WU's.

Sign up and start the points madness.

Any of you peeps out there with i7's trying this? they have 8 virtual cores don't they? Not sure if that would help when crunching numbers tho. I've never wanted a Tyan motherboard so badly in my life as I do that this particular moment.

The foldingforum.org thread mentions it will work on an i7, so if anyone has a fast one which isn't doing too much other work, it would be a good and useful experiment. Any dedicated folding machine which employs an i7 shouldn't have a problem making deadlines, and boosting our team's performance, too.

Anyone running a GPU on Win 7, along with an SMP client?

I'm finding my 9600GSO doesn't perform as well as it did in XP Pro, even when I lower the priority of the VM the SMP client runs in, and raise the priority of the GPU's folding process, as I did in XP. For example, I'm getting figures ranging from 2400-3600 PPD on 353 point WU's, where before it would give a fairly constant PPD in excess of 4400 on the XP machine. I am running it slightly slower than I ran it on the XP machine because the case it's in is not cooled as well, but it's less than 10 MHz difference in the shader clock, so that's not the problem's source.

For all the praise some have given Vista in CPU time used by GPU clients, I think my CPU is being dominated by the VM running the SMP client, and that's causing the GPU's output to suffer. The difference in the machines is that the Win 7 box has an Athlon BE-2400 @ 2840.5 MHz on DDR2, with I believe half the L2 cache of the XP machine, which is 1 MB per core, and the Opteron 165 runs at 2556 MHz on DDR. The SMP client is noticeably slower, too, though, so whatever the cause, it escapes me, since it's not showing up in Taskman.

I noticed yesterday that Newegg has a decent looking recertified 216 shader EVGA GTX-260 board for $129.99. If the warranty was more than 90 days, I'd feel better about it. But for the price, it's hard to beat.

Except that I read people saying nVidia may be producing new models soon, so perhaps prices for higher end cards may drop, too.

Complicated.

That looks like a great deal. I have a 192 shader EVGA 260 GTX and it runs like a champ! :D It gets me 5-7 K ppd consistently.

I also bought 6 EVGA 8800GTS-es and they all ran well. No issues at all. :D

I assume that other SMP folders are having the same trouble downloading new SMP WU's, as well as sometimes uploading completed ones, that I am (my uploads seem to have finally gone through, though)? The thread on the foldingforum.org site discussing the server problem is here: 171.64.65.56 not responding. The last entries state the server is trying to catch up, though there's no indication of why the sudden avalanche of WU's uploading and trying to download (except that it's been down for closing on a day, now -- I discovered it happening last night around midnight EST).

It looks like things are starting to clear up, as I got 2 WU's in the last few hours, and the Server Status page shows things are improving, too.

I got a number of old WU's credited on Nov. 23, but it doesn't seem like I got all of the WU's I'm missing. Does anyone else have better information than my vague memory?

Also, my 9600GSO GPU's fan seems to have slowed down a lot, but not stopped. It was running up to 102° C before I slowed down the shader clock. It was already running somewhat slower in the machine I moved it to, at 1840 MHz when restarting from its occasional crashes, but now it's down to 1736 MHz. That speed wasn't exactly arrived at by scientific experimentation, I just slowed it down and checked the temps it was showing, and kept slowing it until it got down to the mid-80's, and quit. So my 3rd fastest producing "machine" is now notably slower than it was, and I haven't looked to see what I may need to do to fix the fan if that's possible, or if it's cheap to replace if it's worth doing (it should be, though I haven't measured its size and it's surrounded by the heatsink which that may make replacement more difficult, I can't see it well enough to know much for the time being). The machine it's in is sort of thrown together, in a small, cheap case with neither the HD nor the DVD drive screwed in yet. But I should quit running it as it is because the fan is likely to seize and then possibly burn up the entire video card. Too bad driver software isn't more intelligent so as to protect from such things.

Nice assortment of crappy WU's for the last working days this week. I've got 4 SMP boxes, and 3 of them are now running a1 cores, one worth 1920 points on my slowest machine, another worth 2165 on my fastest, and one worth 3340 on my main machine which is moderate speed. The other box is on an a2 it grabbed 17.5 hours ago.

But that wasn't enough PITA from Stanford. They also gave each of my 3 GPU's an 1888 point WU. So my output is, in total, down about 4100-5900 PPD right now. That's quite a Christmas present.

I forgot about this being my complaint thread. So here goes. :-?

2 WU's I've been trying to upload since forever (I think last week for both), and today they expired. What happened then?

I'd like to staple shut the **** of the execrable so and so who wrote the Windows recovery and bootloader code. I need another empty HD to save this thing's data... and it's too late in the day to buy one locally. So one of my other machines is going to have to be out of business for a while.

Sorry to hear that, Jedidiah. Hearing about such frustrations made me reluctant about -bigadv. That, plus the allure is not that strong with the VM penalty and not having a big overclock. I'd be looking at <18k ppd if I went -smp 8 and never touched my machine. [Plus there are hints that A3 bigadv may be coming sooner rather than later.]

ARRRGHHH... I get the GTX295 back from RMA and installed, and now my wife's PC is on the fritz. It was good for 6k PPD. I think it's the hard drive. Grabbed a Samsung spinpoint F3 and hope it gets here by the weekend.

Newegg took 5 days to get me the PSU and HD I ordered on Thursday, March 25 about 4:50 PM their time. That meant my main GPU was offline for that entire period. Of course, the weekend screwed it up, but if you pay the extra to get faster shipping, you can probably get it sooner. I'm just too cheap for that.

Well, at least the new GTX295 is putting out some impressive numbers. The clients in black are my wife's non-functioning PC. Hope to have it working over the weekend.

Things are looking up now. The wife's PC is back up and running. It appears that the Seagate 7200.10 I had in her PC was failing. The new spinpoint seems to have fixed the problems she was having.

While I was in there I took the liberty of rearranging my folding cards. I have things pretty much like I want them now.

i7 920 clocked at 3.8 folding BIGDADV WUs
GTX295 folding on both GPUs

Wife's Q9450 has two GT 240s in it folding. I'd like to fold on the CPU but it slows her websurfing down too much. *sigh*

The kid's PC has the 9800GTX+ folding away. It's an Athlon X2. The power to ppd ratio just isn't worth it so no CPU folding.

I'm hoping this setup will get me close to 45K. We'll know in 6 days.

Hello drfish .. this is your SMP wakeup call ..

With the windows 6.29 client and a3 work units Stanford seems to have addressed maybe all of your issues. 6.29 doesn't freeze when the internet connection goes away! It runs a single instance of the a3 core which "should" throttle much more responsively! At the end of a work unit it shuts down smoothly and quickly! It cleans up the work folder at the start of each work unit! I bet it even runs OK as a service, although I haven't tried it. So, grab yourself a Passkey and see if they missed anything.

And (bless their hearts) for those of us who are broadband challenged the majority of the 60xx a3 workunits I've done so far have a 4MB upload! I will have to get back to you on the rapid return bonus as I'm currently crunching only my sixth a3 work unit.

Whoa! Blast from the past, thanks for the heads up, I'll check it out and see if I can catch up on everything that has happen since I got fed up and quit.

BTW, what kind of PPD can I expect from my shiny new 5870? Is a Q6600 good for much at all these days? 8800GT or GTX?

For the general public, I would still hold off since they haven't completely gotten rid of the A2s and A1s yet. However, I do think you should start check it out.

Still not much yet unfortunately. :( We need the Pande Group to get a move on the common OpenCL client.

drfish wrote:

On my PDC E6300 I noticed a couple hundred PPDs more over an A2. However, the biggest change with the new client and A3 seems to be AMD parity. I posted some numbers in another thread so you can refer to the numbers from my X2 250 as well. They are now neck and neck and seems more clock sensitive. So I would say the Q6600 should give you pretty good points. Do a "-smp 3" and fold the GPU and you should get very decent output.

drfish wrote:

These still give good points. GTX260 will be the sweet spot on performance (gaming + Folding), the GTS 240 (9600GT) seems to be the performance (ppd only) per watt per $ king though.

Time for you to come back and try things. ;)

Yeah, word has it that no matter how powerful the ATI card is they all tend to hit a wall at about 3,000 PPD per GPU.

drfish wrote:

With good bonus points for rapid returns I would expect it to make around 2,000 PPD and possibly a good percentage better. The Passkey bonus system seems to be a carrot instead of the stick of very short deadlines. My e4400 @ 2.3GHz is making just under 400 PPD before any bonus. I will track down a bonus point calculator and try to get you a better guesstimate. GJ says the eight process i7s are capable of over 20,000 PPD with the bonus.

drfish wrote:

With good work units the 8800GT should approach 5,000 PPD and the GTX should be in the 5,000 to 6,000 PPD range.

found these 2 links for calculating bonuses while learning about the a3 a while back

for a3

for -bigadv
http://www.linuxforge.net/bonuscalc.php

overall the smp experience has gone down for me, tho that might be due to the fact that a bunch of my machines are running w2k, which is not really getting much support. i have to say on my w7/vista machines the smp have been pretty stable. was having problem getting units for a bit but turns out i was still runnin 6.23/24beta and the client is up to 6.29...i wish there is some easier way to know there is an update since there is a folding news section in the client/log...

The A3 SMPs have been working out well for me. I've been managing to get onto the Top 20 Producers list (not continuously, but I'm there off and on). I think I've even got a shot at getting back into the TR top 20 in terms of overall points (haven't been up there since the old "crate farm" days).

Thanks for the links, Maph.

It seems I was a little overly optimistic about the bonus system for regular a3 work units.
WU 6024 .. 1287 PPD
WU 6050 .. 1284 PPD
With the best a1 work units I was making about 1350 PPD. If the worst a1s are averaged in it still looks like a net gain plus the client improvements are easily worth a slight ding in PPD. And I'm now looking forward to finding the time to build my Xeon 3210 (= C2D Q6300).

May be the A3's are really GHz sensitive, but I still find your numbers odd. According to HFM.net, WU6024 has done 1718ppd on my E6300 (the 45nm PDC) and 1706ppd on my X2 250. I don't have data on WU6050. While 2.8GHz/3.0GHz clock difference is significant, you have 2 more cores!? Do you happen to have something else running? Also, WinSMP or LinuxSMP?

The Xeon 3210 is still a collection of parts waiting to be built. However, ages ago, I did briefly run the CPU in my son's mobo and IIRC it ran about 2,000 PPD on the fastest a1 WUs.

The numbers listed above are from my C2D E4400 (65 nm) using the online calculator link that Maph posted - http://www.linuxforge.net/bonuscalc2.php. I'm running WinSMP 6.29 on XP SP3, although I have not yet tried the drop-in binary update. The only other things running are Asus PC Probe II, FahMon 2.3.4, and windows explorer.

Does HFM.net give you better numbers than the linked online calculator?
