farmpuma edit (17 June 08, 6:30PM EDT): Tweaked the title (it was, "Folding on NVIDIA 6.12 beta 6"). Thanks for the find, PRIME1!

Installed. Let's see how it does :)

64-bit Windows not supported. :( I'll have to wait a little longer.

Started the GPU2 client last night for my 8800GTX and I've already turned in 21 WU's. Looks like it's taking about 44min/WU. On average, each WU is about 130-148 points. So PPD=4254.??!!!!!

Downloaded and installed before I left for work. I'll be checking my stats all day, now...... that should go over well with the boss.

If that's the case, i will OC the hell out of my 8800GT and i will Install Windows XP right away :P

Possible workaround for 64-bit Windows here. PPD reports for GPU client are very promising, rivaling even the SMP client. :o

Oddly, it works great first time on XP64 with no CUDA driver, just the normal 175.16 that I had been running.

JUST DON'T RUN THE VIEWER. You have been warned. Here it drove my box down into a tar pit. Unrecoverable slowness, 42 minutes to bring up taskman, and then I couldn't hit 'end task'. Very disappointing.

I've been folding on my 8800GT only for the last ~24 hours. Feel free to use my recent stats as a benchmark.

So SLI is not supported huh ?? I am still not home, so no ideas if i can go SLI right away...

Please note the following.
ForceWare 174.55 ~ 2500PPD
ForceWare 177.26 ~ 3500PPD
ForceWare 177.35 ~ 4500PPD

There are HUGE differences to be had depending on all the driver revisions out there.

Well, loaded it up this morning. Got FAHmon working right. Here's my stats:

A64X2 4400, 1 gig ram, Palit 9600GT (700mhz gpu, 1.75 ghz shader clock, 1ghz memory) and I'm pulling 3528ppd after nearly 3 WU completed. I can bump the speed more, but this is stock speeds for the Palit. I'll look into bumping it in the next couple of days.

I notice a definate slowdown in web pages loading. We'll see how well it goes.

No CPU client is loaded at all.

EDIT: This is with 174.55 (the recommended driver). I will definately have to look at the other drivers now.

Glad this is out, I will try it when I get home... Maybe now they can put some effort into fixing the SMP client...

Any indications of what this does to GPU lifespan?

If you have a proper cooler and make sure the temp stays under 60C, the card lifespan will still be longer than a typical PC. The only drawback to that is system-wide temps may go up, therefore monitoring your cooling may be ever more important.

One question, I am getting a quad-core at work. Will I be able to run 4 CPU clients and one GPU client all at once?

If so... I will be back folding asap. Only reason I quite was I didn't know what I could do on my work PC at my new job. Seems like we have almost free-run.

You should try running the SMP client (which uses 3 or 4 cores) and see if you can run the GPU client where it eats up 1 core. Then report back on whether SMP client with 4 cores gives you higher ppd or SMP client with 3 cores + GPU client is better. If you can get some power draw numbers that will be even better. ;)

Seems to work ok... Just finished my first WU (p5001_supervillin_e1 - 98 points) in about 47 mins - so by my calculations that's nearly 3k PPD, not bad! Maybe this new development will be enough to get me excited about folding again... My 8800GTX get's hot though, between 70-80ºC... :o

BTW, on my Q6600 the GPU client seems to be eating about 15-25% of the CPU - more than a fair trade I think. :)

Well, it is running 4 cores, I didn't have time to get the GPU client running too...

I haven't run F@H in a long time, so watch this
http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ ... s=&u=25591

Though I am unsure if the service fired up before I left. It was "starting" and I left.

No 64-bit support :(

I wish I would have known this before I ran it overnight.

In case anyone's watching my numbers, I just switched from the 175.16 to 177.35. No modded inf, just told it manually that I have a GTX 280 (I wish).

No change in the viewer breaking, and I still have a huge slowdown leading to an eventual BSOD if I don't close the client before trying to run 3D. I tried 174.55 briefly and no change there either, so I went with the biggest numbered driver.

Expect more points tomorrow, though I might have to dump this for a release or two if I can't figure out/work around the horrible slowness issues. I bought that 8800GT to run games, not to slow down my machine and refuse all 3D (That's why it's my 8800GT and not this 2400 Pro that holds down my desk). I also lose all 2D/overlay/VMR/EVR surfaces too, so no video. This is an even bigger deal breaker. I can live with gaming/no gaming modes, but having to switch off GPU2 whenever I sit down and turn it on any time I leave my machine is NO GOOD.

A promising start, but only that.

I had slow issues, too. It completely resolved itself (I'm using the 174.55 recommended drivers) by setting the core affinity to one core. Don't know if this applies for you, but it sure helped me.

Sounds like a toasty kitchen heater. Am I correct in assuming it has a dual slot out the back of the case cooler?

drfish wrote:

Is that per core or in total?

Yes, dual slot w/ exhaust out the back. Case temps only changed a degree or two, same for the CPU...

That's total, so it's taking between slightly over half to about an entire core to do it's thing.

It was frozen this morning, just the client, not the system, and only using 1-2% - just restarting now, it's using 7-8% - GPU temp is rising slowly... It got 5 WUs out before it crashed but it looks like it's starting from where it left off...

Keep in mind the nVidia drivers do not seem to control the fan speed properly. You may need Riva Tuner to manually set your GPU fan speed to something more than 70% to keep things cooler.

Looks like my SMP client is not running :-(

I have to fire it up here at home now.

See my sig regarding my thoughts on the SMP client... :-? I think I will mess around with the fan speed tonight...

BTW, I think my crash might have something to do with the defragging I was doing last night...

Looks like they're already out of WU's to hand out. When I was folding, my 174.55 drivers on my 8800GTX were turning out approx. 3200PPD. And I was seeing temps around 70-73c

No, Nvidia-specific server went down. All others were up. I believe the server is back up. Try restarting the client.

Ok, looks like the SMP client and the GPU client install and run flawlessly on my machine. The SMP work-units are MONSTERS. The GPU work units are very fast.

I downloaded RivaTuner and cranked the fan speed to 85% of the GPU so it will run cooler.

This in part is a stress test on this new box to make sure it runs stable since sometimes we will run simulations and modeling that can go for hours overnight. Last thing we want is an overnight crash forcing us to run-run without confidence.

See the link above for progress. All I know is the GPU client SCREAMS (9600GT with 512Mb)

tiny little problem i encountered when running the beta GPU client

checking the log file it says unstable machine...my 8600GT is a poor overclocker thus no overclocking has been done to the GPU in any way

CPU is an E4400 at 3.0GHz...stable the last time i ran Prime95

memory seems stable enough as well...i can run two instances of the console client easy peasy...no problems there

and yes...i did try to open the viewer and bad move...started going slow about 3000/1000000 iterations

right now from the log file i can safely say my 8600GT is a bust in folding using the beta NVIDIA GPU client...using the latest drivers for this specific card without taking a visit to the CUDA website

any ideas? cheers

edit: tried installing the 177.35 CUDA-drivers and it seems that my system setup (see sig) doesn't quite like it...just gives a message saying that no drivers are to be found and setup will now exit

you have to install the 174.55 version. The 177.35 only works with 8800GTX cards AFAIK.
