Typical Distributed Computing tasks

Hello,

for a project on my school (IT class ) I'm researching typical uses/tasks of distributed computing.
If you want to help me (would be nice), then just imagine you are director of some institute/company.
Think about what tasks which require massive computing power and could be easily distributed.
A few examples:
Weather Institute - Parsing Weather Data from satellites
Film studio - 3D rendering of the next blockbuster
Medical research company - Simulation of Biological processes (like Rosetta@home)
Car/Aircraft company - Simulation of wind influences
and so on.

Google and wikipedia not enough for you? Please do your part first and then come back with specific questions. We can give you pointers here and there when you are stuck, but we are not going to do your homework.

Medical research company - Simulation of Biological processes (like Rosetta@home)

Don't use Rosetta@Home as an example of simulating biological processes -- that's not what it does. It predicts the outcome, but does not simulate the process. Folding@Home, on the other hand, is a simulation.
