New Notfred diskless version out

9 February 09: Make Windows Share writeable. Support -smp 8 option. Remove unitinfo.txt from backup (can be giant). Update busybox, glibc and kernel.

Treat it very much as alpha release though, It's taken me literally 2 months to get the new busybox, glibc and kernel to work. I think it's working but don't guarantee it :D

Oh well, thanks a bunch.

Awesome. DOes it still need NX bit? I have a few 1ghz P3s I might be able to setup, and if I can get my hands on a board supporting tualatins, maybe a 1.3ghz p3 or 2

I'm not sure if it needs NX bit or not, all the PCs I have support it.

It's probably not worth folding on something as old as a PIII, the cost of the electricity per point would make it cheaper to buy a more modern setup.

Hi Norfred! First let me say thanks again for all the work you do for TEam TR. You are super-duper! :D

I have a silly question, and please, feel free to mock me if necessary. Do I need to download anything besides your zip file such as VM player to use your new Virtual Machine application and start folding?

You need a vmplayer.. also d/l from the same spot.

You are saying to treat it very much like an alpha, so should I wait a little longer since I am pretty much a "set-it and forget-it" kinda guy? :)

The PXE version I am running seems to be doing fine for my c2d's. Should I not fix what aint broke?

Can I run this on a machine that is folding with the GPU2 client? Do I need to install Ubuntu after installing the VM PLayer?

nOPE.. Notfreds is a linux os and folding setup in one.

D/l the vmplayer, install and then load up the folding vm file notfred made.

Then go to the webpage it makes... and set your team and username.. I like to reboot it using the webpage, than sit back and let er run

Yup, what they^ said.

It's only CPU folding and the aim is to make it the highest CPU points possible on a system, it's pretty lean and mean. My slogan for it is "It boots, it folds". When Stanford supports GPU folding on Linux then I'll add GPU folding.

If anyone has got success stories on this version, please let me know and everyone else here as well so we can be sure it works. All I know is it works for me, but I did make a lot of changes so it might not work for everyone.

I plan to do some CPU affinity work to see if I can increase the PPD even further.

Hi NotFred,

Thanks for answering my questions. However, I still have questions. I am running windows XP 32 bit on my folding nodes. All my nodes are running the GPU client. If, I install VM plaper, and your stuff, isn't the Vitural environment separate from the XP environment and they don't conflict? Do I install a linux distro to run your stuff?

Notfred's stuff contains a custom-built "miniaturized" version of Linux that just runs without user intervention (all the configuration was done when you generated the CD image).

If you are using his stuff in a VM, then you are limited to single/multi-core Linux CPU clients. For single core you can probably just run the Windows client. For SMP, you can do it with notfred's stuff. I was doing notfred's stuff before in a VM, but lately the monster file problem basically made it very unstable for me. If you have the disk space you are better off just run a full Linux install in a VM and run the SMP client there (planning on doing that on my next scheduled reinstall of everything around my place).

The basic idea for "diskless" was to have a barebones build with no HDD but an optical/usb drive, you boot it up and it starts folding. Nothing more, nothing less. It actually makes little sense if you have a HDD anyway.

Initially it was even less than that, no optical drive but network boot. You need a network card to get and send WU's, may as well use it to boot as well.

Notfreds also is setup for monitoring, and what not...

Notfreds is quite easy, i also have a ubutntu vm setup, to run. Just boot the vmware and it goes. Using a full distro has to all get run, as well as space.

The only complaint would be not able to -oneunit it.

So far the new disk is good, no issues yet, othere than you forgot to change the version date;)

I'll look in to setting that up, shouldn't be too hard.

Hmm, which date? It should show:
Diskless Folding version 090209 by Nick Reilly
If it doesn't then I think you didn't actually pick up the new version.

Hmmm, The webpage does indeed say that...... Must have miss read it during the initial bootup in vmware window.

Seems the backup issues around still. If i reboot the disk, the backup restores all the work done upto the reboot.

So if i'm working on unit 03, a reboot causes all the data/files from 01 to 03 comes back.

Okay.......

Just went to poweroff the vmware using the login, and poweroff and reboot didn't do anything, for both the 08 release and 15th release...

Anyone else get this?

Need to "poweroff -f" from the login, similarly "reboot -f". Without the "-f" flag they just signal the shutdown scripts to begin shutting down, only there are no shutdown scripts. It doesn't really make any difference if you do "poweroff -f" or hit the VM poweroff button, there's no state to save beyond the backups that are already happening periodically.

How much ram does this version use? The last version I used was set to 600mb and I experienced out of memory errors and had to up it to 1GB. Not sure why though because my Ubuntu 8.04 x64 VMWare setups only need 512mb.

Some of the RAM is used for the "ramdisk", that's why in the case of the oversized log files it will bust the limit. Your regular Ubuntu VM has a proper "drive" in it right? I think that's where I need to go now too, a real Ubuntu VM.

The new version is set back to 640.. I boosted mine to 960, for the big units.

I've setup a real Ubuntu as well, took me forever to setup the samba so as to use fahmon........ The fred brought this out the next day.

Planetamd has a great and easy guide how to, but this disk is still the easiest way.

Odd, I used the Ubuntu GUI tools and I have a file share up very quick. I'll be trying again soon so I will update.
