Nvidia GPU + Vista64 + 185.20 = Monster PPD Boost

Anyone running this combo might want to check out the advantages of moving to 185.20 drivers: http://www.overclock.net/overclock-net- ... ouble.html

Their appears to be video lag issues with these drivers so this might not be a good thing to run on a non-dedicated PC.

YIKES! If this is true I expect you may give UGN a run for its money for a couple of hours since you seem to have a jump on switching to the new drivers. Enjoy your lead for the couple of hours that you have it. I shall be home soon, and driver upgrade I shall 8)

Here's to hoping Jeffry sees this soon too.

p.s. Thanks for the tip. This seems UNREAL. Too good to be true even. Is it 1 April?

Not me... I'm running WinXP32 across the board which is not benefiting from 185.20 drivers. Having to running Vista on machines that you actually use is too large a price for me to pay.

I've got one dedicated folder that I might put it on, but it appears that the 185.20 drivers don't boost both GPU's on a 9800GX2/GTX295's. It's the single GPU card users that benefit the most. Enjoy whomever can benefit from it.

I am running two GTX285 on a windows vista x64 box with SMP Client on the i7 and the work units for the GPU I am getting right now are of the 8000 step type but they also award about 1680 points each. On a good day right now with the SMP and two GPUs + PS3 folding I break 20k PPD.

From the more than 13 pages of that thread I read before I started skipping toward the end (it was 42 pages by the time I looked at it), it appears the drivers only improve output on Vista-related OSes like this thread subject states. The question now becomes does it improve things with the Windows 7 beta, since the OS is supposed to use the same driver model.

I'd like to know where that driver comes from before I use it, since it's not on nVidia's site that I can find. Betas seem to have quit being released by the time the 182.08 version came out for some reason. I may try it on my 8800GT-256, though the latest driver update (to 182.08), which has helped my 9600GSO, actually slowed down the 8800. I hate mucking around with a new OS install, though. Maybe I'll try putting it on the other partition in that machine and see what happens. But I'll lose folding time.

The numbers posted on the overclock.net thread indicated that a single GTX285 is good for 17000PPD. That's huge for a single card.

There was no definite conclusion about Win7 working, although the suspicion was that they would. Guru3d seems to be a legit site for graphic downloads.

The boosts seem too ludicrous. I'm wondering if the driver isn't performing correctly and is artificially reducing the time taken because it's not computing things properly.

Saying that, I'm not sure what checks the folding software has in place to maintain integrity. However, that check, may itself, be bypassed with these drivers.

The way I'm looking at it, there's either a massive difference in terms of efficiency in the current models (before that driver update) or there's something not quite right.

Well the whole thing is these are leaked unofficial and unsupported drivers.

I doubt Nvidia had any intention of doing this, its probably one of the reason they weren't released in the first place.

I tried the drivers. PPD went up significantly. I then tried to play Crysis Warhead. Crashed twice during loading the level at 94%. Never got to play.

I have reverted back to 182.xx. *sigh* I guess the beta drivers were too good to be true. And Pande group doesn't like the drivers either, so that pretty much says it all in my book.

Side Note, This GTX295 ROCKs Crysis. 1920x1200, Enthusiast settings, butter smooth. Nice 8)

The card isn't that loud either. Maybe I got a good one.

When I posted before I had the 182.08 drivers from EVGA on that I had just happened to update a few days before this finding (and as such assumed they were the 185.20 drivers) so the bump I am getting seems to be just from a different work unit mix on the GPU. I do not have the non-offical 185.20 drivers you have to go out of your way to get on this box. Reading that thread it seems that if I had the 185.20 drivers installed I should have seen a PPD closer to 35k+ on this system.

I got excited there for a minute. I was going to rush home at lunch and do a driver update until I started reading through the thread a bit. Too bad there is no boost for XP. That is what I run on all my folding nodes.

The new mix of 5902 & 5903 WUs has put my PPD up 10k so I am pleased anyway. :D

Hey Pinto Bean! What happeded to your PPD over the weekend? :o I saw you up to 72k and then dropped off to around 50k. Did that new driver make your nodes explode? :-?

Looks like the party is over. The bug was found in the core. It appears that the full calculations were not being done by the 185.20 drivers, however full Point credit was given for partial completion of the WU. Back to 182.08

I never tried the 185.20 drivers... I was tempted for a moment to install Vista but... [shudder].

Just messing around with my farm setup. I'm getting too many SMP WU failures, and not enough A2 cores.

Are those nodes overclocked? Or they were just failing on the 30xx WUs?

Funny thing,

The ATI side of the GPU clients has just released a new core that DROPS PPD to increase scientific accuracy. However, CPU usage is finally getting down to 1-5%. :D

But, the whole thing is a mess right now as it requires the setting of a lot of environment variables and about 5 hours of tweaking to avoid a huge PPD drop and get the CPU usage down to 1-5%.

Try at your own risk, I'm looking into making a thread once more information is out so that the ATI GPU guys here can have a straightforward guide to optimizing the core. Trying to look up the information yourself is a PITA.

It looks like the core updates only if you have 9.3 so stay away from Catalyst 9.3 for now.

The light is on the horizon, once they get enough chums to figure out the best environmental settings, they will have the core auto detect hardware and set the correct ones, then we can be lazy. 8)

Both ATI and Nvidia got the new core. Turns out, alot of work got skipped using the 185.20 driver, as well with some of the new cores.

Right now, ppds will be down, but new benchmarkings coming that'll pop it back up.

I still think it is pretty much a "set and then monitor occasionally" client for the NVidia GPUs when you use the certified drivers from NVidia. :D
