Question regarding computers with no NET ACCESS!

Tue Apr 22, 2003 3:08 am

Okay,

I've got somewhat of a silly question here for you guys.

What is the correct method to sneakernet for F@H?

I have lots of computers I could add to F@H but the simple problem is that these computers do not have access to the internet in any way or form.

Also adding a modem to them is not possible.

From all the reading I have been doing, the only way to sneakernet would be to use the .99 version.

But does that support GROMACS?

Please advise on how to run F@H on computers that are not connected to the net!!

The .99 client does not fold. It does Genome@home. They are currently phasing out that client for the combination client.

I, too, am wondering about this. I have a tidy little network at home that includes a 2000+, a 1900+, two 900's and an 800 but none of them with a modems or online access :( . I could easily load the client and WU's from work here each day if I had to using my external USB HD. Any chance of this?

Not to nitpick, but you can't get a simple 56K modem? One modem with 2K or XP and you're as online as you need to be. 10 bucks for Folding bliss :) Unfortunately you can't just download WUs randomly from Stanford :(

Umm... I think shipping a bunch of computers to SoCal from Saudi Arabia would be a little pricey... :-?

I was thinking about the dilema in Duluth not Saudi. I can imagine that folding out there will be a major pain. But Duluth should be able to get a phone line rather easy ;)

saudi Arabia isn't as backwards as implied is some posts here, If he/she didn't have a phone how would he/she have access to the forum here. I know cyber cafe but that too would imply not being as third world also.

Cybercafe, college, friend... or maybe home, but he has those PCs somewhere without a phone line...

Whatever the reason, those computers have no net access. The question is simple, yet I don't have the answer... can he bring the results in some media (floppy, flash, USB HD, ...) to a computer with net access and post them?

The greatest part of the story is the guy putting so much effort just to help with a couple of WUs. You gotta love this kind of people.

Saudi Arabia isn't backwards by a long shot. They have DSL but my area is just not covered yet.

So that's the reason I'm using dialup at this present moment.

See the thing is this.

I don't want to put in too much money for this folding thing. The most I could commit to would be something close to USD$1200 or so. Based on prices here in Saudi Arabia I can get a node for about 175-200 USD. The rest would be for a hub and cables and powerbars.

My plan would be as follows.

Set up 2-3 nodes to being with.

Use 128MB USB PEN DRIVES as boot drives with a stripped down version of win98SE on them.

Network them to my main computer that has a modem connected to it.

Share the modem with the clients.

Hence, when I dial into the net, all the clients would get the data and start working away.

I think I can use electron microscope to monitor the status of the clients, is that correct?

Once a day I would connect to the net, and flush the work, and get new packets.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this the best way?

As for LTSP, I have a burned copy of RH8 somewhere lying around, but the main problem is that I would have to make a LTSP server just for this, and that would mean wasting some more money.

I have to do a quick calculation to figure out if I omit those USB pen keys, then maybe I could set up another node just for that purpose.

Should be interesting to calculate.........

Either way, I'll work on it this weekend and I'll let everyone know as to what I have decided.

Umm........

I have 4 phone lines by the way.

1 land line for house use
1 land line for internet use
1 mobile line for personal use
1 mobile line for office use

So...........

U decide if the rest of the world isn't the western world.

Don't forget that Saudi Arabia gets most of it's electronics and gadgets from the far east. They also end up getting those swank new technologies that never make it to the USA. Like video phones. Mobiles with cameras, and videophone mobiles.

Saudi Arabia is not IRAQ or Afghanistan. Being one of the richest countries in the world, they are quite advanced when it comes to technologies, but are backwards in culture.

Rather should I say, they don't want to go forward when it comes to their culture, they like it the way they are.

OK then z00100

I didn't mean to offend you, but yes, phone/lines per inhabitant is much lower there than in the western countries or Korea/Japan, so chances are more likely. Heck, even in New York I know a couple of guys who don't have a phone line and stick to their cell phones or nothing. I didn't imply anything but "chances of line unavailability higher". Happens even between different regions in America.

Mobile lines don't count here because an always-on connection would be prohibitive.

However, all that gadgets you mention already made it to the USA and Europe. Most come from Japan, delayed a couple of years mainly for licenses, political decisions to exploit prior technologies, etc...

From my previous post:

that stands true anyway ;)

z00100, all you would have to do is share the internet connection. No need for a sneakernet.
