New Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM II

Tue Jan 05, 2010 1:11 pm

http://www.dpreview.com/news/1001/10010 ... 00isii.asp

Some of you may have noticed that Canon's website has been strangely empty this week. Here's a new model to replace one of their most popular lenses.
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II.

The good news is that it has improved optics (added a flourite element and another ultra-low dispersion element (5 vs. 4)) and improved image stabilization (up to four stops equivalent instead of three) compared to the previous EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM. The bad news is that the new lens may be introduced at a 40% higher price point than the previous one. :(

Bah, should have sold my 70-200/2.8L IS USM while i wondered about it this summer, this will probably lower the second-hand price. but then, I didnt need the money so i never got around to it. Still, at a 40% higher price, it might do nothing for the used market.

Still seems nice, it really could use a touch up.

The new nikon 70-200mm 2.8 is also out, also with improved optics, handling, and VR. Tit for tat I guess.

So I guess this lens is going north of $2000, too bad.

I have the cheapest offering the 70-200mm f/4 without IS, and it performs extremely well in outdoor sports. It would have been nice to get IS or the faster glass, but the extra $1,000 did not seem worth it at the time.

Are you planning on getting one? :p

With the original EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM sitting at $1800, the new lens wouldn't have to demand much of a price premium to top two kilobucks.

At present, I'm more interested in the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM or whatever replaces it.

Well if I was going back to Canon (which is possible when I eventually go to full frame) then I wouldn't hesitate to get the original 70-200 f/2.8 IS, especially used for around $1,400-$1500. I owned it before and it is a great lens, I'm not sure I would pony up the additional $500-$800 to get the new version...I have not yet seen any reviews of the new one either though, so after those start to come out who knows.
