This got me wondering: how many folks still use component cables for HD video?

I still have component cables. Its because my TV only has one HDMI port. I tried an HDMI splitter, but it would never pick up my BR player.

Well, I only use HD component out for my PSP's. Everything else uses HDMI.

I have a Hitachi tv that is a few years old with only one HDMI port which is dead. It has two component inputs both of which I am using. I have a blue ray drive hooked to one and HD Dish Network on the other. I had my Wii hooked up with component until we got the blue ray player. Now I need more inputs but I am not willing to buy a new tv.

I still use component for my slim PS2 (it lets me use progressive scan for DVDs and what few games support it, like God of War).

about 6 years ago I bought some component cables for my progressive scan DVD player to work with my new flat screen TV then
when i think back it makes me laugh at how they always try to market stuff to the consumer
about a year or two later I gave it to my dad and he was fine with it but recently bought a large lcd so now my little sister has it
the only thing I might use them nowadays for would be like on a nintendo wii

I just helped someone plug a new cablebox/PVR into a Panasonic plasma that was so old it didn't have HDMI, so component was the only choice.

My single HDMI port was in use when I got my DVR, so my DVR is connected by component. Does this mean you're going to start seeing component connections disappear from new TVs as well (edit: when I first wrote that sentence it made it sound like the component connections were going to vanish, what I meant was new ones)? A bunch of Wii owners that get new TVs will probably get mad, if they ever decide to play the console again.

Even the newer ones seem to have at least one component. I actually picked my tv because it has a couple components+3 hdmi.

There's so many component devices out there in the wild (cable company equipment, etc.) that I don't think it'll happen soon. I'm sure due to copy protection considerations, content providers would like to see it vanish ASAP, but that might simply not be feasible.

Besides, apart from requiring a separate audio cable, it's not like component is chopped liver. Its quality is plenty for most of the sources it's used for, as long as you're not using bottom-of-the-barrel connection cables.

Only HD source I have connected right now is the DVD player and since the set is a very cheap 2yo LCD at 720P, it's not even worth it to buy an HDMI cable.

If I every get around to buying a laptop with HDMI output, I'll use it for that.

I had to laugh this weekend -- I've been needing an HDMI cable to test something, and I didn't have any lying around available. I happened to be walking by a Radio Shack, so I just stepped in to see what they had. Monster cables for $99 and more, of course, but even the cheapest on offer was about $35. I just thanked them and left. I didn't really want to wait for monoprice to ship something, so I drove down to Fry's (had some other things to get too -- it's not hard to justify a trip to Fry's). In one of their sale bins was packages of three 2m cables for $10. I wished I could've broken one apart and just bought one cable for one tenth the price of Radio Shack's cheapest, but at least now I have some spares.

I use a ps2,wii & 360, with a universal component cable, i also have the original 360 component cable, and its the exact video quality than the universal one (exept from small electric shocks while touching the console one from the original) ,and i will leave hdmi to a future bluray player
