I may try the -BIGADV switch when I put in the second NV275 this weekend. It is running Ubuntu 9.04.
Folds under Wine on the GPU's. Has anyone used the -BIGADV switch? IS it that big of a points boost?
Looks like 2.5 days or more to fold a unit. Not sure if it would increase points. Worth a try I guess.
It dual boots to Win7 for games.

Some people are trying in Virtual. To use all 8 "cores" you have to use
Sun Virtual Box VM, which I have found is slower that VMware. The latest
release is a big improvement on the old versions.

Well, now I guess we can see why so many other teams are beating the heck out of us lately. It looked from the context in reading backwards from the 11th page that others are using other VM software besides Sun Virtual Box, but I didn't see how they managed to do that yet. The thread seems to wander quite a bit in the 5-6 pages I did read, but being able to run -BIGADV WU's on machines with 4 cores + HyperThreading while still running Windows certainly could help lots of people produce more output. Too bad my electricity rates just jumped this month.

You can use VMware player with 8 cores. Here are the instructions. You should be able to do 20-25k PPD with Bonus with this on a i7 920 @ 3.9.

I haven't done this yet as I don't run 64Bit WIndows with 6GB RAM. You will need to allocated 4.5Gb-5GB of Ram to the Linux guest. You will need at least a i7 920, hopefully overclocked.

JPinTO you are right I just booted to Windows 7 on that machine and I have VMware Player 3
on it and it does go to 8 cores. I only set it to 4 when I installed. duh!
I will still use it under Ubuntu for now so I don't have to mess with windows unless
I want to boot into windows to game. Now just have to find my passkey for folding.

Nice, should double the points on that CPU from 10k to 20k ppd.

I think Flybywire said he had 2 socket box that should be able to work as well.

I just set up two dual quad boxes for the bonuses last night and I should see the points come in on Monday. Let's see how well this pays off.

Makes me wonder if the 3 "memory channels" of a 9xx series make any difference in completing -BIGADV WU's compared to the 8xx series's dual channels. Because the latter certainly is cheaper memory- and motherboard- wise, and at least 860's and 870's have HT.

Ragnar Dan, for the task at hand, I don't think there is much difference.

JPinto, 5GiB is being used.

Nice points boost Flybywire!
Just got the core i7 folding, had water cooler issues. Working OK with a 10 deg C. drop.
According to HFM.net it is getting 22k ppd. Also have two NV275's SLI folding in it.
May have to look into one of those dual socket Mbrds.
Glad to see you back chasing Gerbils, and me!

That 22K PPD. That's in linux right? How much ram does it consume?

The system you ask about is getting 24k ppd under win7 64bit. Running in Vmware player ver. 3. It also has two
NV275's folding which is 17-18k ppd. It's an i7-920 at 4.0 Ghz with 6 gigs of memory. I have allocated 5gigs to the
Vmware Player.
Parts are arriving this week for an Identical system except it will have one Nv275 and it is an i7-930.

Unfortunately, yes. However, I'm going to lose two of my bigadv setups tomorrow. :(

Impressive numbers indeed! I was doing pretty well with my i7 rig when I had the GTX295/GTX285 combo, but it was way too loud, so I sold the 295.

I'd like to get those SMP PPD #s, but I'm afraid my machine would be too sluggish with only 1GB ram assigned to Win 7 64. I use this machine daily. None of my rigs are dedicated folders.

What do you guys think of this folding rig?

3 GT240s at 4,000PPD each
i860 at 13,000 PPD

In Win 7 64

$90 seems a bit pricey for GT 240s, three video card rebates to juggle, plus three video card fans to maintain and eventually replace.

HTPC #2? Or perhaps The Guest room PC? In an enthusiast's guest room a top notch PC is viewed as excellent form. /grin

BTW, the EVGA Precision tool is quite slick and reads exactly the same GPU core temp as RivaTuner.

Looks OK but your ppd estimate maybe to high. Even at 4.0 Ghz you may not see 13k on most units.
The NV240's I don't have, but I did not think they are that fast. I have a 250 which is a 9800gt+
and it gets around 5-6 depending on the WU. It is getting 6345 ppd on a 353 pointer right now.
So maybe 4k ppd.
It will certainly give you a big points boost! Good luck!

Fuzzhead

ps all of my parts arrived just have to carve out some time this weekend.

I might be able to justify a new PC in my gym. We'd be able to watch netflix on our LCD while we work out. That'd be cool.

I'm also at some point going to put an HTPC in my main TV watching room, but my PS3 does all the things we need it to do at the moment, to it's kind of hard to justify that one...

His forum gerbil ranking.

Even if I move my ~3k ppd back to UGN I don't think it is going to help much. We definitely lost some key people. :(
