Just one more lens... no really, I promise!

Sat Mar 20, 2010 12:15 am

OK..... So I was happy with my purchase of the Minolta AF-50...... so now I'm thinking I'd like something in the telephoto range. I was looking at another little hole in the wall like camera store (they are the best) and I asked about what he had in the way of Minolta or Alpha mountable lens. He pulled out the only lens he had which so happen to be this one.

Tonika AF 70-210mm/4-5.6 (beer can equiv) and had a price-tag of 95.00 on it if memory serves me right. Just curious the thoughts on this one, I'd talking the guy to 75.00 on it, but someone I think that's not going to happen since he actively sells film cameras to college/high-school photography teachers, ect. The lens itself was immaculate, it didn't appear to have had more than maybe a few shots taken with it, so im not sure I could talk him down any, plus this isn't exactly a pawn shop. Whats the take on this affordable glass looking glass? Having the 18-55 kit lens, the 50/1.7 and this... would adding this tie me over for awhile (id have a general use, portrait/night shot and a telephoto). The only thing missing from that list is Macro and I think i'll do without until much later.

The Minolta beercan gets better reviews (particularly for image sharpness), has a one-stop larger aperture, and the filter doesn't rotate when you focus (making it easier to use a circular polarizer). However, that's a good low price for an auto-focus telephoto zoom lens. Here are a few at KEH to compare:

Just to nitpick, it's not a "beer can equiv". It's a stop slower where it counts.

If you want a cheap telephoto to play with, it's a reasonable price. I don't know that it's particularly "good", though. One of the local shops here has an AF Tokina 70-210 of some sort for Minolta mount at around 50 bucks, along with a number of other cheap AF telezooms. It's easy to go cheaper. Whether this one is a good value depends on your budget and needs, and on how well it performs.

Does the shop have a beercan in its collection? Because that would be a better buy. $95 for a Tokina that sells for €25 on ebay is not a great deal.
