My dorm allows me to register two MAC addresses because they say they're running out of IP addresses. Let's just not ask why they didn't switch to IPv6 and go on. I have a Playstation 3 running Linux, a Windows 7 laptop, and I don't see any option for Internet Connection Sharing on my Windows laptop. Even if I did, I only have one ethernet port on that laptop, and I don't know if adding virtual ethernet adapters would let the ICS option pop up. How do you even add virtual ethernet adapters for Windows outside VMWare anyway?

Or I could use PS3 Linux... I haven't found much resources on virtual ethernet adapters for Linux, only stuff about how it works in the kernel. The third computer which I'm trying to connect to the internet will have only a 100Mb Ethernet connection. I have a WRT54GL on the way, it's just that I don't know how long it'll take so I'd like a stopgap solution. Any ideas?

Option 1:
MAC1: Desktop LAN
MAC2: Laptop LAN
PS3 WiFi<>Laptop WiFi
ICS on laptop. It's there, keep looking.

Option 2:
Spoof one of the PC MACs on the PS3. Connect up to two devices, changing MAC as necessary.

Most wireless routers will allow you to clone a MAC address. Just buy a cheap router, set it up to clone 1 computers MAC address and then run everything you need from that. It can be either wireless or through ethernet.

That /could/ be against your university's ToS. We don't let people plug hubs/switches/routers into wall jacks & then plug stuff into those, and wireless routers are especially frowned upon.

Wireless. Hey, does your dorm have decent wireless? Maybe they let anything onto their wireless, like we do.

Why would any university frown upon that? In my dorm the guy who registered my MAC specifically told me to get a router if I wanted more than 2 computers to be connected. I took his advice and got the WRT54GL - but not before I considered a dual Itanium2 to do the same job

Anyway, I'll go with spoofing the MAC. Thanks for your suggestions everybody.

Wait, what's the problem if you have a router? Just plug them all into that.

On the side topic, my college didn't like wireless routers too much because people initially left them unlocked, but there wasn't much enforcement and once people started locking them they stopped caring.

Guys, you are not reading properly. The router is on its way, so the OP was asking what to do in the meantime.

At OU the penalty was steeper than a frown. I heard it was something severe like turning off the port of the offender, or fining the dept of the offending staff/faculty. I don't know if the penalties for the dorms were the same.

Unless he's ordered the router on a slow boat from New Zealand, the obvious solution is simply to wait for the router to arrive.

Win7 doesn't have ICS? Why would they have removed that feature?

Even if Win7 lacks ICS, you could probably work around it by running a copy of Linux in a VM, and using that to share the connection...

You can totally use the laptop to share the internet connection. Open up the network connections window and in the properties for your network adapter there should be sharing option. Alternatively I think if you go into create new network you can setup up an ad-hoc wireless network which other computers can connect to and use the internet through your computer.

That being said in College they made us pay for our internet and being the little hacker that I am used our internal filesharing network (it was college) to connect to other peoples computer's read their mac address and then spoof them on a router so I didn't have to pay. I think I eventually found mac address that was registered but clearly unused through some other strange method. Whatever the case it worked great and I saved some small amount of cash.... not exactly my proudest moment in retrospect but I was thought I was pretty clever at the time.
