Is 74C too hot for E8400?

Mon Mar 15, 2010 2:00 am

Am having my current PC for just over a year now. Just after building, did overnight CPU stress tests and the temps at full load were just around 60C.

Repeated those tests today and was surprised to see temps crossing 70C in two rounds of IntelBurnTest (tested with 'Maximum RAM available' setting). The readings are consistent with CoreTemp, RealTemp, Speedfan.

I have not overclocked the CPU and I've not moved my case around.

Anyway, my questions are
1. Are these temps too hot?
2. If Yes, should I re-apply the heatsink thermal compound, or should I get a new heatsink (using stock heatsink now), or should I get more case fans (using stock 120mm from Antec Sonata III case now)?
3. If Yes, to one or more of the above, please give me your product recommendations.

Note - I do not run Folding@Home, and temps remain under 55C during my normal day-to-day tasks (Firefox, foobar, Google Talk).

Thanks in advance, to this excellent community, for your feedback.

Haven't checked on my rig for awhile but downloaded those programs to help you out:

Real Temp 5.8
Intel Burn v2.4

Temps peaked at 55c

Rig details:
E8400 @ 3.6ghz
evga 680i mb
Artic Freezer 7
Coolermaster 690 with 2 120mm fans
win7 x64 enterprise

So yeah, seems like your temps are a little high.

They are in a sense. You might want to point out ambient temperatures. Being in Louisiana, i've had summers where 80 degrees farenheit is the coolest i could keep the inside, and air cooling quickly breaks down. Back to the temps. They are above the average, they are too high for overclocking, and would likely cause stability problems if you tried. On the other hand, the cpu would most likely still last many years at those full load temps, and would cause no problems if it doesn't already. I would buy an aftermarket heatsink, but you probably don't have to do anything if you don't want to.

Intel Burn Test is a fairly unrealistic load for any CPU, and mid-70s while running it is not surprising on a stock heatsink. The only upgrade likely to help with the CPU temp is a heatsink upgrade. Assuming you're not overclocking or intending to, pretty much any after-market heatsink will be an upgrade from the stock Intel one.

Xigmatek make some good value 92 and 120-mm tower coolers, complete with fans from just over $20 (on Newegg) or with fan + seperate bolt-thru kit for around $30 if you'd prefer a more reliable mounting mechanism than the Intel pushpins.

Did you use IBT a year ago when you ran "CPU stress tests" a year ago? IBT usually pushes at least 3-5C more than other apps like Prime95, so that accounts for a bit of the difference. Also was there any change in the airflow dynamics, like a new video card?
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

Summer is not yet out, and it is all rainy outside. I do not consider the room to be warm.

I do not recall running IBT then. I was running LinX at that time. I ran LinX now for around 10 min, and even that managed to get the cores up to 74C and 72C. It just stayed at that range and didn't get beyond that.

The new video card is not in yet. Noticed that dust has accumulated inside the case and on the case fans. I will use compressed air over the weekend.

That is refreshing to read. So, am thinking with the current loads, and the occasional full load, it should be ok to maintain this set-up for around a year or two. I just didn't want the CPU to be at the verge of getting damaged.

Yeah, that's your issue.

74 degrees is not ok, clean your heatsink and reseat with good thermal paste. Use a good thermal paste cleaner first. Arctic Silver makes a good set.

Here is what I am planning...
1. Clean fans with compressed air
2. Remove heat-sink and remove thermal compound with Arcticlean.
3. Apply thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5 or Zalman ZM or other? :-?)

Any other feedback?

Thanks.

A long pending update - I finally got to applying Arctic Silver 5 on my processor yesterday. After a long nervous wait (thanks to a single long beep, which I later realized was because of changing the video card), the machine was back on. I know that I have to wait around a week for the burn-in, but now, after 5 passes of Intel Burn Test, am getting 69C as the maximum.

Thanks to all the TR gerbils who provided their opinion in this thread.

Are you sure your heatsink is clean?
A fine dust over the metal will insulate and cause the heat to not dissipate as well.

Raise in chip/system temp is usually due from obstructed flow and dust on metal.

Not 100% sure but it might start to throttle at 75 celcius ?
But Intel say this chip is design to operate at upto 100 Celsius, 70c is just like a warm breeze for that chip:)

This is a very well known issue with the Wolfdales. The problem is the stock locking mechanism on your heatsink. The stock heatsink is just fine. The problem is the securing mechanism. They are almost useless. One way to test this out is to manually press down on the heatsink while in Bios looking at temperature. If you notice the temp begin to plummet while pushing down on the top of the heatsink fan then the problem is that your heatsink is not secure enough. In all likelihood that that is your problem. I literally had to j-rig mine down. My temps were in the 60s and 70s. After I j-rigged the heatsink unit down my temps went down to 39 degrees Celcius while gaming.

With stock heatsink secured well enough the e8400 should never go above 45 to 50 degrees at full load. Anybody who tells you that 60+ temps for wolfdale is normal doesn't know what they are talking about.

Get a bolt-thru kit to eliminate the loose/unreliable push-pins that come with the stock Intel heasink:
