Wireless and Ethernet Conflict

Tue May 18, 2010 5:56 pm

Hello, I currently have 5 computers set up with a router and a switch. We recently moved offices and now we are using wireless internet. As long as the Ethernet connection for any computer is enabled, the computer cannot connect to the internet through the wireless card. If I disable the Ethernet connection, then the computer can connect to the internet normally. I tried bridging the connections, that didn't help. The computers run Windows Vista Business x32 and I have tried 2 different brands of wireless card so I think its configuration issue. When I diagnose the problem with internet explorer, it says there is a conflict between the 2 networks and that I should disable one of them. (if i diagnose through the normal network panel it says nothing is wrong...)

Does anybody know what I need to change in order to allow both the Ethernet and Wireless to work at the same time? We have several wired devices so I can't switch to an all wireless network.

Go to Network Connections, Advanced Menu, Advanced Settings, and set the order of the network connections so the wireless connection comes before the ethernet.

Thank you for the suggestion (the menu bar was hidden), but they are in the correct order already, so that didn't help.

Are both NICs being configured automatically (DHCP) or manually? Are the wired and wireless networks the same subnet or different subnets? I could certainly see things getting really whacked if both interfaces are receiving a default gateway setting from DHCP servers on different subnets.

Try disabling the default gateway and DNS server in the configuration for the wired interface.

Why are you trying to set the network up this way, anyway? Seems like a PITA to me.

I dont really know how else to set up the network... I never set up the original network, I am just trying to add wireless access and hopefully use Internet connection sharing once it all works. How do I disable the default gateway and the DNS server? I tried opening the properties for IPV4 and changing it there but when i do ipconfig it doesn't show the values I enter there.

Looks like you've got all the machines plugged into a router or something. Perhaps you could connect a wireless access point that supports client mode to the wan port on that. This would allow you to run the internet through your existing cabling and have the added benefit of isolating your network from and other wireless users.

EDIT
sound like you're changing the ip address in the right place, what does ipconfig show after you've changed it?

EDIT (again)
sorry you specifically say you've got them plugged into a router, still the suggestion stands.

As JBI said, try disabling the wired network's gateway entirely, since you're not using it - gateways are for accessing another network, and also its DNS. You'll want to do that in the router, if it lets you.

Unless, of course, you're wanting the old not-natively-wireless devices to see the Internet for some reason.
