1) Smallest footprint possible (I am thinking mini ITX)
3) most power for its size (In other words if I wanted to play Far Cry at reasonable levels I could
)
There aren't many motherboard choices available in mini-ITX, and the ones that do exist have serious compromises compared to the wide selection of do-anything micro-ATX motherboards on the market.
Intel:Motherboard:
$130 +7½ -15 MIR Zotac H55ITX-A-E mini-ITX H55 LGA1156 motherboard with WiFi and one PCIe X16 slot
or $80 -15 MIR ECS H55H-I mini-ITX H55 LGA1156 motherboard with one PCIe X16 slot
Processor:
$115 Intel Core i3-530 hyper-threading dual-core 2.93 GHz LGA1156 processor and on-package IGP with HSF
or $2?? Intel Core i5-655
K hyper-threading dual-core 3.2 GHz LGA1156 processor and on-package IGP with HSF
or $280 Intel Core i5-750
s quad-core
2.4 GHz LGA1156 processor with HSF
or $373 Intel Core i7-860
s hyper-threading quad-core
2.53 GHz LGA1156 processor with HSF
Memory:
$120 2x2 GiB PC3-12800 G.Skill F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO (DDR3-1600, CAS 7, 1.35V)
or $99 2x2 GiB PC3-10600 G.Skill F3-10600CL9D-4GBNT (DDR3-1333, CAS 9, 1.5V)
I might choose the
$200 Core i5-750 2.66 GHz on a decent micro-ATX motherboard, but the ECS mini-ITX motherboard board
cannot provide enough power for a regular quad-core 45nm desktop processor. The Zotac board
can. Neither of them can handle the
$280 Core i7-860 2.8 GHz.
AMD:Motherboard:
$130 Jetway JNC84-LF mini-ITX 785G+SB750 socket-AM2+ motherboard with IGP and one PCI slot
or $100 -20 MIR Zotac GF8200-C-E mini-ITX GeForce 8200 socket-AM2+ motherboard with IGP and one PCIe X1 slot
Processor:
$62 AMD Athlon II X2 250 dual-core 3.0 GHz socket-AM3 processor with HSF
or $142 AMD Athlon II X3 405
e triple-core 2.3 GHz socket-AM3 processor with HSF
or $179 AMD Phenom II X4 905
e quad-core 2.5 GHz socket-AM3 processor with HSF
Memory:
$95 +1 2x2 GiB SO-DIMM PC2-6400 G.Skill F2-6400CL5D-4GBSQ (SO-DIMM DDR2-800, CAS 5, 1.8V) - for Jetway
or $110 +2 2x2 GiB PC2-8500 GeIL GG24GB1066C6DC (DDR2-1066, CAS 6, 1.6V) - for Zotac
I would choose the
$62 Athlon II X3 425,
$100 Athlon II X4 635,
$160 -15 card Phenom II X4 955 BE or
$200 Phenom II X6 1055T on a decent micro-ATX motherboard, but the mini-ITX motherboards
might not provide
enough power for more than a 65-watt CPU.
