Hmm, looks like they need a 1-0 Mexico over Uruguay and a +6 goal win over South Africa. Enjoy the plane ride home, boys.

EDIT: After reading the tiebreaker rules, they only need a +5 win over South Africa assuming a 1-0 Mexico/Uruguay. For the record, group-wide tiebreakers are

1) Goal Differential
2) Total Goals

After that it goes to head-to-head points, goal differentials, and total goals. If 3 teams have the same number of points, the head-to-head is a 3-way.

Even if they do it will be a short lived victory since whomever comes second in Group A is going down to Argentina. They are looking very solid. Perhaps a bit shaky in the back 4 but with their ball possession skills opponents don't get many chances to exploit it. Their biggest problem in qualifying was scoring goals but that hasn't been much of an issue thus far in the tournament. I like their chances despite the fact I'm an Oranje fan.

Much more likely Mexico - Uruguay will play 1-1 They don't need to beat each other, this way they both go through... I'd find that quite likely, they'll just let it sit at that. But y'never know.

heck yeah. Don't know what the ref was seeing, thought he had a pretty clear view at it as well. The guys were tugging back USA all over the place and the scorer was clear so... Yeah, bad shout.

Not much to discuss there. The ref saw the US winning and wouldn't stand for it. If he won't even identify who committed the foul (per Donovan), it's pretty clear why it was called.

There's bad calls in every match - didn't you see Germany earlier on?

At least here in US sports refs/umps who make bad calls either explain it to death to try to defend it or (much more rarely) admit they were wrong. Calling a foul but not identifying the foul or the fouler? That's either incompetence on a grand level (hardly unknown among World Cup refs) or the result of bias.

As for the match - disappointing. At half time I think I had a tear or two - 2-0 down against Slovenia is not a joke..
But then.. that which the US is famous for came along... Spirit and self-belief.

I kid you not. Every American in the stands (which must have been at about 39% of the total support) was shouting "USA, USA..." When the ref made a bad call (plenty of them) then came the "B*LL*hit, B*llsh*t".
Amazing.

Actually, it hasn't. It was brought in by a company from another country who began mass-producing it in 2001.

This World Cup has thrown up quite a few surprises already. Italy, France, Denmark are out. US finishing top of their group means England will play Germany on Sunday. Today's Brazil vs. Portugal and Spain vs. Chile should be interesting matches too. Feel bad for Ivory Coast...they probably won't make it into the next round inspite of being better than some of the teams which have qualified.
