Must have Android apps

Thu Jun 10, 2010 2:49 pm

Since I just got my EVO yesterday, I am lacking in quality apps. At the moment, I only have Advanced Task Killer, Twitter, Facebook, and Urbanspoon. What apps do my fellow gerbils recommend?

I like DroidLight, Google Earth, Evernote, Robo Defense, Tip Calc, Tricorder, and Google Voice. There's a Google News app as well; it shows up as "News and Weather".

Astro File Manager, it is a file explorer, file extractor (.zip, .tgz), backs up and restores apps, process killer, and other features. It is very handy, i use it all the time.
Also Pandora is nice for music on the go.

Here's what I've been using so far:

Advanced Task Killer Free
AndChat: IRC client
Android System Info
ES File Explorer: File Manager, I like it because I can browse network shares and FTP sites
Google Sky Map
GPS Status
Open GPS Tracker
Rainy Days: Best weather radar app I've found

k-9 for email
handcent or chompsms for messaging, handcent if your phone does not have an indicator light
Hi msn, hi aim, etc for messengers. i haven't find a multiple protocol app that i was happy with.
Metal Detector just for fun

Compass
Bubble - which is a bubble level

Layar - if you're in a big city this and your gps works well this will be amazing for you. Not so much if you're in the middle of nowhere.

SpecTrek may be fun for some, it's a camera based ghost hunting game

Jogger is a 2.00$ app, but for runners that can sneak their phone on them and get good gps service it will be well worth it. Uses gps to track your run, average speed, distance.

Jewellust is a fun game, one of the best jewel games, been around since the start. Runs well, plenty of entertainment.

Sensor insider pro - tracks the data of the accelerometer and exports to matlab or csv.

Labyrinth - yep it's a ball labyrinth game, this game single handedly made several iphone users jealous because of the strangely realistic feel. The iphone version may be up to the same level by now though. Another app that's been there since the start.

dxtop, open home - both home screen replacements. If you get one of these be prepared to lose some battery life, and be accepting of a slowdown if you don't have the most powerful phone, but admittedly the beauty of the home screen, customization, and sexy widgets can make this sacrifice worth it.

c:geo for geocaching.. great program but not supported officially by groundspeak so beware of that. Supoosedly the developer and groundspeak are working on a resolution.
GaiaGPS for topo maps.
Google Sky Map
Flickster (which doesn't give showtimes for this hole in the wall place i live haha)
Scanner radio
Tank Recon 3d
gStrings (guitar tuner-have an actual chronograph one but this is a nice app)
AppBrain (don't think i've used it to it's full potential but seems great so far)

What is everyone's thoughts on this article about task killers?

***General Apps***
- EBuddy - Top Notch for messaging, does MSN/Yahoo/Google/Ect... BUNCH more.
- aCar - Helps you keep maintenance schedules as well as track your gas mileage, very cool app..... love it and use it.
- IPconfig - Need I say more?

***Games***
- Fishin 2 Go - Just very cool, could use a few more things like tournaments or "Achievements" but its still an addictive game.
- Robo Defense (previously mentioned)

Ringdroid is cool and all, but my EVO has the stock ability to create ringtones from whatever songs are on your phone. Go into Music -> select a song -> Menu -> Set as ringtone.

Congrats on the Evo! The ringtone feature is a 2.2 for Evo thing? Scratch that, found the menu! I have ringdroid, but never once used it since nobody really calls anymore.

I use:
Astro -- a must
Google Voice -- good cheap long distance
Google Talk -- free IM, dump the SMS
Remote RDP Lite -- RDP on the Droid? Awesome.
ConnectBot -- ssh baby
Terminal Emulator -- nothing like ping to brighten your day
Wifi Analyzer -- honestly, I used to carry around a laptop with NetStumbler
GPS Status -- impress your friends
Droid48 -- impress your math teacher
ShopSavvy -- impress your wife
TipCalc -- impress your waiter
Note Me -- Android doesn't come with a note-taker app
gkcd -- I mean, these big color screens are perfect for comics
Andoku -- when it's too crowded on the train to read my book
Battle.net -- screwed if I lose my phone, I think
Google Goggles -- doesn't recognize insects, or much else for that matter
Google Sky -- although I prefer to just look up
gStrings -- I used to be able to pick out a perfect G#
Mobile Metronome -- another thing I'm not perfect at either
Calm seas never made a skilled mariner. But, sadly I'm an A's fan.

If you're interested in comics, then you should check out Droid Comic Viewer (also known as ACV). It's a full-fledged digital comic reader (CBR, CBZ, etc.). So far, I have the first volume of Kick-Ass, Y: The Last Man in its entirety, and a crapload of the Batman books, namely the Elseworld titles.

Right now I'm using the following non-stock apps on my EVO:

ACV (see above)
Astro
Backgrounds
Barcode Scanner
Facebook
Handcent SMS (Much better than the stock messaging app)
Layar
Nesoid Lite (NES Emulator)
Pandora
ESPN ScoreCenter
Google Voice
The Hangover Soundboard (Sometimes during the day, I need to hear Stu's Song)
Twitter
Urbanspoon

I'm not an evo user but a droid user however some of you might be interested in trying Launcher Pro. Its a home screen replacement. Its not particularly flashy but what it is, is super smooth. Finally I can flip through home screens without a single jitter. It will also do the sense peak thing where it shows all your home screens at once. It will also let you customize the bar at the bottom (I was really hankering for a dedicated phone button). For droid users it will also finally let you have more than 3 home screens. Best of all the maker of the program is still updating it constantly and is very willing to take suggestions. I strongly encourage taking a look at it. Its still in beta but really it doesn't crash (unless you turn on a few more questionable settings  ).

I got tired of waiting, so I rooted to 2.2 and installed setCPU. Noticeably faster all around. Also bought psx4droid from the appstore and am playing final fantasy tactics on my phone. It works great on 2.2, was a bit choppy on 2.1 though. The Overclock and new JIT helps a lot im sure. I'm using the latest Sapphire ROM for the root. I am so stupid happy with this phone.

Also: Give Wyse pocketcloud RDP/VNC beta a try, I was thoroughly impressed with the RDP on it. It works.

Which phone do you have? And how much of an OC did you do to yours? I'd do that to my ATT locked backflip if I could..... force that sucker to 2.1... :)

Google sky has to be one of my favorite apps. Power amp (?) provides a lot more control than the standard music player and allows for amplification and eq. Adobe has a sketch pad app that works pretty well. Other than that there's plenty of great time killers and games. Pew pew is like geometry wars on crack. The racing and flying sims aren't bad for the most part. Nova hd is the only shooter I've found that's any good, but the controls are a bit frustrating.

One thing I HIGHLY recommend is Gameboid. It's like 4 bucks for a great little GBA emulator with access to a HUGE library of games. I've been getting my Pokemon Fire Red on a lot lately.

Beautiful Widgets Lite for the weather widget
Übermusic is my current music player of choice, made by the same guy that makes LauncherPro
Minimal Reader for the RSS widget.

For security in case you loose your phone, there's "Lookout", and "Where's My Droid".
