This story's been submitted to Slashdot as well, so if you're a user there, go mod it up. Generating a little bad press could help grease the wheels here.

FWIW I have an ipod touch that was jailbroken for a while. When jailbroken, something (an app I installed?) made it run down the battery with substantially greater rapidity and pump out more heat. Obviously the safety mechanisms should be in place so that a software glitch doesn't set the thing on fire, but it's certainly quite possible that sans the jailbreak this incident wouldn't have happened. It sucks and all, but I can certainly see Apple's side as well as yours on this.

Submitted to Boing Boing and Engadget, and covered on my blog. (And I submitted the direct TR link to those sites, not my blog's link.)

WTF Apple.

Well, it's not like you're a typical Apple user. Therefore they probably don't care about you.

I've run things from the App Store that worked the CPU hard. It will, as you saw, run the battery down faster and make the device get warmer than usual. This was at least a magnitude of order more. I'm quite certain you could boil water on the surface. It was far hotter than I ever imagined it could get.

So basically you're saying I Think Different and that makes me an unacceptable Macolyte? Poor Steve would be crushed.

Doesn't really matter at this point, but would it have been possible to have wiped it clean before taking it to the Apple store? I like Apple's products and am typing this on my shiny new iPhone 4 (no antenna signal attenuation for me!), but I also know what Apple is like; I hate their arrogance and am somewhat ashamed to be so hooked on the iOS experience for my mobile phone needs. It seems kind of obvious that they would have blamed this on you jailbreaking it.

That doesn't make it right on their part, I'm just thinking that a little foresight would've been in order given Apple's reputation for stuff like this.

You should have just plugged it in & let it burn up completely, then dumped it on the desk of the manager at the "Genius Bar".

That is still an option, assuming the iPad wants to cooperate.

With a wife and kids, I'd run an extension cord to the middle of your driveway. Was there an available socket near the Genius Bar?

A happy conclusion:

Well, it's long past most folks' interest-end date, but I thought I should post that everything is resolved. I forget who suggested it, and can't find it now, but whoever suggested calling Apple Support directly was spot-on. I finally had a day off that wasn't spoken for ahead of time today, so I called Apple Support, not expecting much. I scheduled a callback and got my call in under a minute. Three minutes of hold, and I got a really friendly guy named Jonathan on the line. Jonathan heard just the basics (iPad HOT!) and immediately transferred me to a Product Safety specialist. I recounted the story in full to him and he was *quite* concerned, and echoed many of the sentiments here, that jailbreak or not was immaterial to the failure, and that Apple was seriously concerned. He offered to do a mail exchange, and I agreed but apparently sounded quite unenthused. He offered to send my case to the local store with an 'override number' attached, but clearly indicated that Retail doesn't answer to him, so nothing was guaranteed. Given the proximity of the Apple Store, I asked to try that.

Total talk time from first ring to hang up; 34 minutes, 8 seconds.

He even set up the appointment for me.

Walked in, presented iPad plus case number, the store manager (not Robert H) came out to take care of it. Prompt swap, sign here, done deal.

This is what visit #1 should have been. I've thanked everyone involved quite sincerely, and thank you all for your comments, ideas, and opinions.

Now that it's officially legal? Betcha booty I did. If for no other reason, I'm a paying user of comic reader mobi, which was band from the app store.

I'm reasonably confident that this one should never try to immolate, too, based on the odds. If it did, I'd accept that as proof that the failure is mine.

Same here, great to hear it's sorted and you're happy Forge, props to the Apple guy for being cool about it (even though the iPad wasn't) :D

Ars is reporting that a class-action lawsuit is being filed for overheating iPads. Maybe that's why you were able to get a replacement so easily the second time you tried.
