HDMI to VGA converter?

Mon Aug 23, 2010 6:35 am

A customer needs to convert a HDMI input to VGA. As I understand it, the HDMI signal is entirely digital and VGA is analog, so a simple cable system won't do, but I'm having difficulty finding a converter that goes in the right direction.

Also, considering that a piece of kit to do the conversion is probably going to be a bit expensive, a recommendation from someone who has used the bit of kit would be much appreciated!

There are things that do that, but they are extremely expensive. http://www.monoprice.com/products/search.asp?keyword=hdmi+to+vga&x=0&y=0

Also are you looking for something like a HDMI coupler? http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10419&cs_id=1041907&p_id=2781&seq=1&format=2

I would check monoprice.com. They will have any cable you would need.

Could you explain what your customer is actually trying to do (i.e, connect a computer to a tv or something), so we could possibly suggest a much cheaper solution.

The customer has a Sony 'desktop' computer, all built into the monitor. It only has a HDMI output option for video, no VGA. There is also a projector in another room with VGA cabling built into the walls. We tried using converters to go from HDMI to DVI then DVI to VGA, but I think the DVI - VGA bit relies on the analog option in DVI to be transmitting the signal.

I've come across that HDFURY2 product, well one of them anyway, identifying itself as a HDMI -> VGA converter, but actually it's DVI -> VGA.

As another option to the HDMI-->VGA convertor, you could always pickup a USB2-VGA graphics card like http://kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_5301.html . (Am in the UK so not sure how much use the link'll be, but that's the product anyways). It should do fine to drive a projector (assuming it's not stupid high res) and is perhaps a slightly cheaper option.

I've got this problem as well, with an 11.6" laptop that lacks a VGA out.

Are you sure you weren't looking at the plain HDFURY instead of the HDFURY2? Or maybe you actually need the HDFURY3...

By the time the dust settles, it may be cheaper (and less trouble) to just replace the PC...

USB2-VGA graphics card

I think Mentawl nailed this question on the head. A USB to VGA graphics card is going to be the cheapest option you have. http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011403&p_id=5325&seq=1&format=2

I think you posted the wrong link -- it just links right back to this thread.

Edit: I assume you actually meant to link here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=73912
