New Camera Gear

Wed Aug 25, 2010 11:40 pm

Canon announced a slew of equipment today.

new 1.4x & 2.0x extenders:

300mm f/2.8 & 400mm f/2.8
500mm f/4 & 600mm f/4

8-15mm fisheye

Was hoping for a new 100-400mm lens but it appears instead Canons releasing this odd puppy:
the new 70-300 f/4-5.6

60D also announced today... with a changed positioning for lower end market.
----

I'd love to be able to afford some of those high end telephoto lenses but I'm sure I wouldnt use them that much.
Might give one of the extenders a try.

as for Nikon.. they announced several lenses a few days back also.
Some look nice.

85mm f/1.4

this one looks nice.
24-120mm f/4

seems aimed at the 28-300 Canon.. but didnt know that was a big seller? These long, slowish zooms no longer appeal to me.
28-300mm f/3.5-5.6

No worries, my lens collection has pretty much hit a stabilization point  I might jump on the EF-S 10-22mm at some point but not soon, since I don't have another lens that I can sell to pay for it.

I hope the Mark III extenders cause the price of the Mark I/II units to drop a bit, though. I have an older Tamron 1.4x right now and would prefer to have a Canon 2x instead, but I can't swallow the notion of paying more than half the cost of a new lens in order to purchase 1/3 of a lens and the loss of an f-stop.

Yeah, I'm waiting for the 55-300 VR. I had a 55-200 VR refurb that I had got from Adorama for $130. Went on a few photo excursions with it... but then it was used to save my camera from a fall onto concrete. Camera fine, lens destroyed. Awww... so now I'll just wait for the 55-300.

Wonder where the price of the new 500 and 600 will end up? The 400L went up 4 grand. :o

would get the 24-120mm when I get a FF camera. I like the contant aperture and the range. Kind of a pricey lens though.

28-300mm. People seem to like the jack of all trades, master of none kind of lenses. I'm sure there's a market for it if Nikon and Canon sell it, but I can't say it's worth the compromise to me.

Sony also has some interesting new stuff, like the 'SLT' A55 and A33 cameras.

Phase Detect AF in a Live view camera using a transflective (fixed) mirror. Unfortunately, it's missing a few killer features, like continous AF in high speed shooting, PDAF+CDAF hybrid system, and full manual video (and 24p shooting), but this new formfactor will be one to watch. It's about as small as the Panasonic G cameras but with a larger (and more light-sensitive) APS-C sensor and faster AF. Win!

Cosina-Voigtlaender has also announced they are joining the Micro Four Thirds consortium, so hope to see some nice niche manual focus lenses from them.

About the only holdouts right now are Panasonic and Olympus - they'll likely have something to show at Photokina in September.

Yeah, I also think of superzooms as 'tourist' lenses. Man up and get some primes :D .

Too many first-time SLR buyers are really in the market for something like the the Nikon Coolpix P100 or a Canon Powershot P11, but instead go and purchase the priciest SLR body they can afford without a second thought to the lenses. Then they discover how large and heavy an SLR is compared to the camera they should have bought, and they sure aren't going to buy a bag of lenses to tote with it. So an extra-long zoom is what they get.

My roommate is almost in that category. He was actually a good candidate for an SLR but he should have bought a Rebel XS, not the T1i, and then saved up for a 10-22mm ultrawide zoom, a 50mm prime, and a 90mm or 100mm prime macro, which would fit his shooting style better than the kit lens and the craptastic 75-300mm zoom that came with the bundle.
