Which CPU (4 vs 6 core)

Fri Sep 24, 2010 10:08 am

I've been looking at a CPU upgrade, and am torn on which way to go. Phenom 1055 x6 2.8ghz, or Phenom 945 x4 3.0ghz. I'm stuck at 95w, my mobo doesn't do AM3 CPUS @ 125w it seems. So is the extra $50 worth the 2 cores and 200mhz drop in clock?

Oh and I should mention, this is for gaming and photo/video editing on a light level.

For gaming 4 cores are more than enough, but for Photo/Video editing the more core you have the better...

Yup, I agree with Jigar... it likely depends on whether the games or the photo/video editing matter more to you. For gaming the higher clock speed will help; but for photo/video the extra 2 cores will more than make up for the clock speed drop (provided the editing apps you're using can fully exploit 6 threads).

Now that I've really started to look into it, seems I'm screwed. The 95w 1055 is impossible to find, same goes with the 965. Leaves me with the 945, which seems to be the fastest 95w AMD is stocking for sale.

That should be just about equal as far as gaming goes. Give it a look?

If you're going to go the Athlon II route, I'd highly suggest http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103871 since I don't think that 100 MHz is worth $25, no way, no how.

I had seen this one as well, on Tiger Direct. Then I saw this in the comments:
Was searching for HDT55TWFK6DGR. When I finally found it, I find that the description does not match what I was expecting. HDT55TWFK6DGR should have been the 95W version but the description in the Product information is for the 95W version. Also the model number is different. I used the chat feature to talk to a representative and she confirmed that this is the 125W version not the 95W version I had hoped. My motherboard can accept up to 95W CPU which is why I needed the 95W version. I don't want to lower one star for what would have been a good CPU.

So knowing TD reputation I'd rather not take a chance on it. I mean how is it TD is the ONLY supplier of the 95w CPU?

EDIT: The more I look at it the more I think it's worth a shot. They list HDT55TWFK6DGR specifically, and they have the 125w version listed separately. Thanks guys, I'll jump on this 1055 in that case.

I think you should go with the 6 cores.

How "light" is you photo/video editing? What type of camera do you own (just so I know the compression format (i.e. .H264, AVCHD) that you are using)?

I ended up going with a Phenom X4 945. It was basically the best I could do for my motherboard. the 95mW 1055 was impossible to find in the end.

As for my photo/video editing, it's VERY light. In fact I haven't even gone past Lightroom 3 since getting the T2i 4 months ago...

Yeah, I've had a really hard time finding 95 milliwatt desktop CPUs too!

(J/K, I know it was just an innocent typo...)
