DOCIS 3.0 and router

Thu Oct 14, 2010 10:36 am

I upgraded my cable package recently to 30 Mbps / 5Mbps. When I went to test my speeds, I was getting like 8 down. I plugged directly into my modem and I was getting 60Mbps. I wouldn't expect a router to throttle itself but it is an older router, I would guess at least 5 years old. I'm fairly certain that there's nothing configured in my router that would slow things down, and the wireless is off so no one is leeching.

Because I have multiple devices from my phone to my xbox that need connectivity, I need a new router I'm guessing. I plan on flashing mine to the latest firmware just in case there's life in it yet, but baring that, what would you all recommend? My biggest use of my network is gaming and file transfer for streaming to my xbox. Apart from that, I don't want my speed choked off obviously. Thanks!

Sorry I don't have router recommendations for you, but given that your old router is 5 years old it probably just doesn't have the CPU horsepower to handle that level of throughput. I would check the charts and recommendations at SmallNetBuilder for a new one.

For the longest time, routers only would work with 10Mb Internet connections, but allow 100Mb intranet connections. Now that I think about it, I think my old Linksys is limited to the 10Mb.... and my internet is 14Mb. Time to do some checking.... nope, I'm good.
