Anyone picking up Black Ops for the PC? I am very interested in seeing how this game turns out especially in multiplayer for the PC. I loved the first MW and World at War was pretty good as well. Been playing MW2 for the 360 so I figured I might as well give this game a whirl.

No. I prefer single player titles with a good story.

Waiting it out. Need a new dose of multiplayer. TF2 and MW2 are just getting long in the tooth and Bad Company 2 was a big disappointment for me. I need to see if the MW2/1 communities are going to embrace it. I have high hopes with the return of dedicated server support (kinda). Would love to be able to frequent a server again instead of the random games you get in MW2.

It it wasn't for the Gran Turismo 5 delay I probably wouldn't give this game a second thought. Unfortunately I have nothing to play now besides the new Bond game so I'll likely be picking this one up right away.

I am not impressed with COD BO, the episode in Russia in 63 with MP5's and red dot scopes? Going to the Pentagon to meet Pres Kennedy being escorted by BMW motorcycles, I mean they sure didn't take the time to get stuff correct. The graphics sux to, sure a disappointment considering COD MW2. I hope the Multiplayer is better.....

What kind of game modes are available on this? In MW2 instead of co-op campaign play, they had those co-op Special Ops missions to play through which were a lot of fun. Are there other co-op modes available this time around?

Special Ops mode is gone; Treyarch replaced it with their Zombie mode, similar to the one in World at War. They also let you play deathmatch and team deathmatch against bots. Other than that, it's pretty similar to the last Modern Warfare game.

I'm interested in this after a few positive reviews, but only for the single player (same for the new MOH game). Currently I'm playing Bad Company 2 multi, which is awesome (multi without vehicles just doesn't sound appealing), and will probably stick with that until another Battlefield game replaces it.

Think I'll wait for a Steam sale for both of them.

I'm the type of person who can't stand vehicles in a FPS game. I'm also the type of who doesn't care for kill streak rewards or weird play load combinations that are often exploited. This makes me sound like an old man... I guess I'll go play some Counter-Strike. Ideally I'd still be playing Soldier of Fortune 2 but it has no community.

To be honest, Bad Company 2 Rush mode is the reason most of my community's Counter-Strike players are converting. It's like a progressive defuse map, with mounted weapons and vehicles, and squads and customizable load-outs. Oh, and there's Destruction 2.0, which I think is unparalleled as a deformable environment system that gameplay actually depends upon.

What makes BC2 special though, is that they made vehicles work. Previous Battlefield games were buggy to me. This one, however, DICE got right, and I'm loving it. Now, I only catch a gun-game round or two, and stick to Bad Company (and L4D2).

Black Ops is buggy, and they made a whole lot of wrong choices about it. Contracts, wager-matches, perk-setups, etc, no quick-scoping, etc. I didnt sign up for an FPS only to get something akin to Black Ops Manager. About the only really good things they did was getting back dedicated servers and not letting kill-streaks stack. Still way to many killstreak sometimes though. Even the levels play akin to each other more then MW2 even though they look different.

Still, I'll play it just for the fact its new and MW2 has horrible matchmaking, etc. But I wish they would've keep the things that MW2 did right.

I loved the campaign. I'm astonished at how well it turned out. I'mma spolier tag this part, I REALLY liked how they turned Reznov into a human, his back story, him showing emotion other than anger. brillant! I will say that it does at times get hard to remember that you're in the 60's. They didn't put much time into making the weapons era specific, or true to their real conterparts. (You find Russian's in Laos in 1968 with AKsu-74's, and in the bay of pigs you have an M-16/M-203) All in all, I really liked it.

how do wager matches detract from the game? it only adds, and it is very fun imo. and i think the perks are much better balanced. so did you like getting noob tubed and commando stabbed every 5 seconds in mw2? because that really doesnt happen in black ops at all, thanks to the way treyarch balanced and fixed the perks. how is that a wrong choice, to make a more balanced game? its obvious you were an intervention quick scoper in mw2 since youre pissed about the no quick scoping thing, just because treyarch decide to not cater to that lame playstyle doesnt mean that it was a wrong choice

Having fun online with this game.

These are all good things.
Contracts, wager-matches are an added dimension to the game.
Lean, prone, dedicated servers
Good looking MP maps
Game runs good on my ancient machine.

Anyone got a list of good Team death match servers. Something along the lines of mature and good fair play?

I do have to say that I am sad to see the inclusion of prone in this game, way too much dolphin diving going on.

For some reason I think you got the opinion that I dislike the game, which I really dont. If that were the case, I wouldnt play it and be at lvl 37 already. What I do know is that since I've played most of the FPS-games since Wolf-3D, came out, I also know what I like and dislike about things. I would also like to point out that these are opinions, and you are entitled to yours and dont have to aggree with me. And the same goes the other way of course. But I dislike fiddling with economy when I want to play a fast FPS-game.

Than I also aggree with Chun¢, they couldve had more attention to detail in some ways with the weapons. Having the python snubnose being a mod for higher accurucy feels backwards. Yeah, I havent compared shooting a snubnose and full lenght revolver in person, and snub noses can be accurate, they still require more skill to shoot and longer distances.

My biggest gripe is still the levels in some ways. They sure are pretty, but when I play them, even though they look different, they play mostly the same. I feel that MW2 had better diversity in its levels. Compare Rust, Favela, Cabin and Afghan for example. They vary wildly in both looks, but also in how you can play them. The levels are more similar between themselves in Black Ops. That could easily be remedied with a map pack they will probably charge for if I know activision though.

I didnt say that all changes were bad. My thoughts on the various matters are these:

* Noobtube - having tube resupplied by scavanger was a mistake in mw2 which I am glad that they removed. Although one could allow for a single resupply of the tube, not not endless.
* You havent played enough, people are still going rampage with commandostabbing and it still works well. especially in the small levels still, just that they removed the ridicously long lunges, but it still exists, and can be used to good effect. And yes, Lightweight, Marathon and Steady aim still works fine for doing shotgun/akimbo pythons/tomahawk/knifing fast enough. But yeah, cutting down the lunge range and gun/knife cuts down on the amount of people doing it and raises the skill requirement, which is good.
* Quickscoping still takes skill to use properly. Its not an automatic win that most non quickscopers seems to think. Right now the snipers having a large time penalty on ADS is a way serious disadvantage making the whole class of weapons very ineffective and hence get people to camp more. Which personally, I think is a bit of a bad tradeoff. What this should be taken against is that most weapons still have laser accurucy on the first shot, even with fast ADS and reddot. Havent tried out the m14+acog combo yet, but that would probably be decent replacement for the old quickscoping.
* Wager matches are fine, in that the game modes are good, pricepool is a nice reward, etc. I've always been a big big fan of gungame for example. But if you want to just go in and do some gun game, and havent played that much, or just bought a load of money, it forces you to play TDM or whatever to raise entry money. Not that its too much, its just that it is. And this is what detracts from the experience. Its not hard to raise the money, a single round, but the question is WHY. In that case, make it 10 grand permanent entry fee or something.
* Contracts. Theres no way to manage contracts between rounds, its just a way for people to have to quit, go into the meny, fiddle around. The price of the contracts is a measle, since most of the contracts give back less money then what it takes to go inside and choose the damn things. And since when did you have to put a wager on contracts. Just let em be normal time based challanges that are directed to the weapons you use for each day and be done with it. Not to mention that they are buggy. Some contacts you buy, exit the menu, and they disapperared. Several times I've gotten "contracts filled" emblem inside the game, just for the round to end and go out in the menu, uploading stats, then be met with the "contract has expired". Yeah, treyarch, thats 4000/4000 you owe me just this weekend in buggy high-end contracts.
* Killstreaks are still unbalanced on some maps. Being hit with 3 mortars and 5 napalm in a single round is just as bad as mw2. Oh, and even the first chopper has flares, and guess what, you only got one shot in the first launcher.

* Server browser and menus still freezes up/twitches every X seconds, so no, thats not fixed yet. Most of the lag stutter has been fixed, not all though. Still, I would be a hypocrite if I didnt mention that yeah, while I may be bummed out about it not being fixed on release, I'm not surprised at all, especially since BC2 and just about all other games seems to have issues at launch nowdays. And on some maps, the whole game still stutters to if you enter a room at high speed if there are people there. I dont know what the issue is, but since latency is below 50ms, and I have a 100/10 lines that give that effectively and works fine in all other games, networking is not the problem. Except for that the whole game run just fine in 1920x1200 so...
* Friends tab, yay, you can join on friends, and thats a good fix.
* See above for what I think about contracts and the wager fees.
* Lean on the other hand is nice, not that I use it that much, even though at time it has given me a few good killstreaks on CTF/Domination rounds.
* Prone - they had it in mw2, but after having played alot of BC2 and hated dolphins in BF2... yeah the dolphins are back, and I do my best to erase them. The good thing is that true dolphin diving in Black Ops comes with a time penalty for weapons use, and that was a really good choice. While I think prone in itself is alright, the dolpins misuses it too much. But diving through a window on the second floor, landing in the grass outside and killing somebody out on the field, yeah, its a VERY nice killcam.

I picked up Black Ops, haven't played it since I found it was performing DDoS attacks (UDP floods in the server browser) on me in the server browser. Being all dedicated servers are from a single source, can't Treyarch and gameservers.com fix it so it has gateways that collate the lists of servers that data center has instead of DDosing people with individual queries to each server?

My fav mode is Sticks and Stones, that xbow from the Skinamax movies is lots of fun (especially in HC, kill then BOOM! his teammate dies too) and useful for flushing out snipers in the homes in Nuketown.

i love sticks and stones! tomahawking the leader is SO SATISFYING! Especially hearing them scream and swear like a little girl when they realize theyve been bankrupted! classic.

and aphasia, you make good points, and opinions are opinions, it sounds like youve had worse luck with killstreak stackers, backstabbers and connection issues because i have had hardly any problems with that stuff, so maybe thats where the differing in opinions comes from. also, i have played enough. im level 33. i know plenty of loser dudes with no lives have probably already prestiged 3 times, but ive put in enough time to learn the dynamics of the game, trust me. but ive always thought and will continue to think that quickscoping is uber lame, even if it takes skill

My clan has one running.
It's HC which to me is the only way to play this game.
Look for RedHour in server browser.
We play mostly in the evenings.
TNP clan has one I've played on.
It's also pretty good.

Re: Black Ops

I was looking forward to this game simply because there hasn't really been a competitive shooter worth playing since COD4 dropped. I had some fun with Black Ops but the honeymoon is over.

- Worst game sound in recent memory. After the incredible sound of FEAR1, COD4, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the 3d sound in this game is simply a joke. I really can't put into words just how terrible the sound is in this game is. The guns sound like toys, footsteps are all but nonexistent and there is next to no directionality to sounds in the game. No game should sound this bad with an X-Fi and Sennheiser HD555's.

- Even less recoil in this game than COD4. Seriously, made for 360 controller FPS has all but eliminated recoil from modern console ports. The Commando assault rifle is a more effective no-recoil hack than anything one could download for older games

- Maps: seem pretty uninspired and nothing really stands out. There doesn't seem to be as much effort put into level design elements such as side balance and sprint timing compared to COD4. There is really no maps that stand out as excellent like Strike, Vacant, and Crash did in COD4.

+ One thing I will give respect for is Barebones mode. Taking out all the gimmicks, killstreaks, n00b perks in favor of actually having to use your gun and your brain to win is good. Remember when FPS actually involved shooting people with guns? I had started to forget after all of these cheesy attack choppers, attack dogs, n00b tubes and air strikes. Respect for barebones Treyarch.

+ CTF mode. Gotta love some good ol' CTF.

All in all I'm pretty bored with this game and am glad I managed to grab it for $45 through direct2drive. This game is simply not worth $60. I have yet to play the single player (but who honestly ever bought COD for SP?) and the Zombie mode sounds pretty cool. I will probably get some extra value out of the zombie mode but I am pretty over with the multiplayer game. Hopefully mod tools will bring something akin to Promod in COD4 and make the game worth playing / scrimming / competing in. I'd rather pug / scrim in COD4 or 1v1 in FEAR Combat or Quake Live for the time being. Zzzz.

Below is my thoughts positive and negative on Black Ops. You must keep in mind that I am playing this on my new Xbox 360 after being a die hard FPS gamer on PCs for years, I've done invitational level competition in Soldier of Fortune 2 and Counter-Strike: Source.

+ Perk balance is better than MW2... much better. I never feel like I am at a massive disadvantage just because I don't want to play a cheese perk layout.
+ Multiplayer maps have a better variety in their look compared to MW2.
- Multiplayer maps don't have a wide enough variety in gameplay style. Many of the Black Ops maps feel like a corridor shooter. Tons of camping around corners because of this as I've witnessed in my own experience on the 360 and watching my friend play on his PC.
+ Killstreaks are better balanced and more compliments to the main aspect of the game, shooting, than as just powerful "moves."
- Except for attack dogs... they just seem a little too powerful. Maybe too many dogs.
+ Customization options in playercard is pretty cool.
- Layout sucks for customization.

Overall I like the game. It'll be my mainstay FPS game for awhile it appears to be the most popular one among my friends. On the topic of PC to 360 transition... after learning how to aim the only thing I miss is dedicated servers.
