I notice that Amazon is currently selling the LG 55" LX6500 LCD 3D TV for ~$1850 with 4 pairs of glasses included. From poking around this looks like a reasonably good price for what seems to be a pretty good LCD TV (it's edge-lit, but LED and has local dimming). I think I should stay away from plasmas given how quickly I can run through power (and heat my apartment) as-is (I don't yet own a TV), and want to get a 3d-capable set and am thinking about jumping on this. Anything else I should consider?

What content are you planning on playing on it? Do you have direcTV?

I have Netflix (w/ BluRay), Hulu Plus, and buy some iTunes content. I occasionally buy movies (always on Blu-Ray). Plus some time on my PS3 will be coming up. Cable and DirectTV are never going to happen.

Yeah, I'm pretty stuck on the OMGinormous size, I'm more likely to drop the 3D than go smaller.
But I really liked Avatar, and more 3D is coming.

I'm trying my hardest not to go on my "3D glasses* rant...and I'm...barely holding on...

is the only way to play 3D on a TV through a receiver is with pass through?
then you have to route the music back to the receiver from the tv again?

I don't know, but my guess is that it means you can pass 3D video through the receiver. I'd be shocked if it required any sort of loop-back, but older receivers that used HDMI wouldn't have supported HDMI1.3, which is required to provide the bandwidth for 3d video.

And now I've got three people who know me telling me to buy a 2D TV and buy a 3D one in a few years when the technology has matured. Which wouldn't sway me except if prices keep dropping I can buy a nice 2D TV now and a nice 3D TV in 2-3 years (when there's more content) for the same price as a 3D TV now. I knew there was a premium but I hadn't realized it was close on 100%.

3d passthrough is what you need in order to pass 3d video content through an intermediary device. Basically, if you are outputting 3d from the Blu-Ray player, every device in the chain needs to know about 3d, or the content won't pass any further than that device. So if you are using a 2-year old receiver that is HDMI 1.2 or 1.3, then the audio + video will go from the Blu-Ray player to the receiver. The receiver will process the audio, but when it sees the video, it won't pass it through to the TV, due to the 3d flags in the content. So no video on the TV. The receivers that support 3d pass-through will understand that 3d video, and even though they don't process it, they will pass the video through to the next device in the chain, aka, the TV.

There are a couple of alternatives to getting a receiver that supports 3d passthrough. The first is to get a Blu-Ray player with dual outputs and have 1 output go to the receiver and the other to the TV. The other is to get an HDMI splitter that will send the same signal to both the TV & the receiver.

Note that this is only true for true 3d content. The output of a DirecTV box or other cable box is what is called frame-compatible-3d and doesn't have any 3d flags on it. The TV has to manually interpret the content as 3d and then display it in the alternating eye format.

W.R.T. 3d content, I think that it is amazing. Once you see sports in 3d, you will be hooked. Even though there isn't a whole lot, what is out there is pretty good quality. You can get the World Cup 3d Blu-Ray if you are into that thing. Either that or find a provider with ESPN 3D.
