GT5 Racing Wheel

Thu Dec 02, 2010 4:55 pm

Hey guys,

Buy brother's b-day is coming up, and I was thinking about getting him a wheel for him to play Grand Turismo 5 with. He's not a racing fanatic by any means (largest reason he wants GT5 is so that he can go on the Top Gear race course), so I don't need anything exceptionally high end to give the best simulation experience. Really, just a wheel and pedals.

Any suggestions?

I don't want to be a downer, but if he only wants the game to try out the Top Gear track, it sounds like a steering wheel isn't something that would be put to full use. It would most likely sit there gathering dust after a few weeks. Have you thought about maybe getting him a PlayStation Move bundle if it isn't out of the price range?

Thought of a few ideas, including the move. I haven't ruled anything as definitive yet (I do have both Christmas and his B-day to buy for :P). Just thought if anyone had any reasonably priced suggestions, it might be a good surprise for him. And he doesn't ONLY want it for Top Gear, it's just his single largest interest in the game.

Yeah, I agree, steering wheels for consoles are one of the most expensive accesories you can buy and one that ends up used the least. With most wheels costing in the $10-$150 range, I say your better off getting him another game or some blu ray movies than a wheel he will probably get bored with in a week or two.

Do wheels on consoles work as well as on the PC?

So, time for a bit of a necro post, but I think it's appropriate.

Been watching my brother's habits over the last year, and I do think that getting him a wheel would be appropriate. 75% of the time I come into his room, he's playing either GT5 or F1 2011 now on his PS3, while watching an F1 race on his computer. Really seems to have taken a large interest in it, and I think he'll truly enjoy the wheel.

Doing some research, reviews on the Logitech G27 are generally positive, with a few outliers, but it's a little more expensive than I was looking to spend. Anyone have a good suggestion for a wheel in the $100 - $150 range?

you may be able to find a logitech DFGT on sale at around that price. It has more or less the same force feedback mechanism as the G27 (which by the way is excellent) but doesn't have some of the thrills (clutch pedal, H pattern gear selector, shift lights, etc.)

GT is not for everyone and demands nothing but the best from you. It is very enjoyable game on ps3. Playing this game is very good experience of mine. I have played all series of this game.
