Steam Sale Has Arrived (2010)

Mon Dec 20, 2010 4:43 pm

The servers are running a little slow for me at least, but there are lots of deals.

Today's best deals seem to be Bad Company 2 for $7 and Portal for $4.

If you're getting Portal, then have a friend who owns HL2 buy it for you. I'm pretty sure that you can gift it at the low price.

Of course, if you don't own HL2 or Portal, then there's probably something wrong with you.

Cool. There's some good deals on there.

Just picked up Super Meat Boy for £3
Complete F.E.A.R Series for £5.50
Bad Company 2 £6.79

Meh, that's the PC staying on all night downloading games!

Edit: They also have F1 2010 at half-price. Ohhhhh, must resist temptation :-?

How is the F.E.A.R. series? I never played them when they came out. Have they aged well?

It's downloading as fast as it can! I'll let you know tomorrow. It's 4 games, big games so it will be an all-nighter - Not bad at all for just over a fiver :)

Update: There servers are taking a pasting! F.E.A.R 1 is downloading at 216k/sec, F.E.A.R 2 at 7.1k/sec. A long way off the maximum speed my Broadband can do. Make this a 2 night job!

You might have a problem. I'm not completely serious here, though, but I might be partly.

If Civ V doesn't get gifted to me and if it goes on an awesome sale, I'll jump on it. Otherwise, I have too much to play and not enough time as it is!

I would recommend not buying anything from the Steam sale until you know whether or not it will be on a featured sale. Unless you really want to play a game right now, it seems wise to wait a week to see if the price will decrease.

This. Buy what you like on the daily deals and then finish off any other games you might want at the last day.

lol I think I do have a problem. The funny thing is only a very small handful of games will hold my attention. I always seem to go back to TF2... It's been my default game since it came out.

Ditto. Although post patch Civ5 and Elemental have good odds.

I love having default games. For several years it was Super Mario 3 and then Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Then it became Starcraft, then Diablo II and then WoW (through BC), then Supcom with FA, and now Starcraft II. My "default" games get played for several years at a time for literally hundreds of hours making them great investments, while other games barely get touched. And in the middle are some other games I bought, finished, really enjoyed (some of which for a lot of hours in a short timespan like DA:O and the Disgaea series) and then ignored. For example I haven't even fired up Mass Effect ($5 during the Steam sale last year) beyond making sure it runs. I'm much more frugal with my gaming money now (Starcraft II was my last purchase for myself) since my time is similarly limited.

That's totally off-topic. Burnout Paradise for $5 might be worthwhile if I didn't already own it for PS3.

Same, and I would probably advise against anyone buying this on the PC - Just read the Steam Forums for it.

Apparently, the PC version is missing a load of content compared to the 360/PS3 version, the on-line store has been removed (but still works on the consoles) and Criterion have cut support for it - So your on your own. This has caused quite a few people to suspect that the multi-player servers for PC will users will be pulled pretty soon too.

Burnout never really belonged on the PC anyway. I don't think it's case was helped by being released almost a year after the console version neither.

FEAR 1 was excellent, both in terms of scares and atmosphere. It was the Crysis of 2005 as far as graphics go. FEAR 1's multiplayer has to be one of the best online FPS I've ever played. The guns feel great, the sound is phenominal (if you have an X-Fi or an EAX capable card), and the gameplay is just so good. To me it's like the perfect mix of Quake and Rainbow 6: Raven Shield. Perfect pacing and insane adrenaline. The melee is really fun online, you can jump kick, roundhouse kick, slide kick and holster your gun and punch people in the face/balls.

FEAR 2 however was probably the biggest disappointment of any game I've ever purchased, I feel robbed for dropping $50 on that horrible game. Bleh. Reaks too much of consolitis, dumbed down gameplay, no dedicated servers or anti-cheat. Of course dedicated servers and anti-cheat do not mean a damn thing when the gameplay is so horribly uninspired and generic. It's almost like the production team was like "hey, let's take all of the great things that made FEAR 1 unique and innovative and replace them by copying the design choices of every successful modern developer and fail horribly at making a decent game!" Ugh. The story was bad too, very predictable and the B grade hentai ending was the stupidest thing I've ever witnessed in a video game. If FEAR 3 is anything like FEAR 2 it will be equally horrible.

That said, I gifted my gf's brother bad company 2 for $6.71, should give him a nice demonstration of what his newish i7 / GTX 295 equipped gaming PC can do :).
