What does your home office/work/desk area look like?

Mon Dec 27, 2010 5:38 pm

I'm not sure if this has been done before. I thought I remembered seeing it, but I searched and found nothing. Perhaps my search-fu is calling in sick. Anyways, where do you usually work/play/waste time/troll TR from when you're on the computer at home?

Image

Its just a basic Ikea table top and legs and cable management deal screwed underneath. The white box on the wall has the modem and router in it. On top is my NAS (I had it inside but it complained about the temperature a lot). 15" MBP i5/8gb/500gb Seagate Momentus XT in a Henge Dock (LOVE IT!), Abit iDome speakers, 24" Samsung LED LCD monitor and a Microsoft Comfort Desktop for Mac. I wasn't even aware MS made a Mac specific keyboard. Came across it on Amazon, and it looks like it was discontinued in about 2007. Got it brand new for $28 shipped with a Laser Mouse 6000.

And yes, this is how it usually looks. All nice and clean.

Show me what you got!

Props for being so clean and simple. I'll take a picture when I get a chance, it's a disaster zone.

I should have cleaned up a little.

Warbastard's looks like a picture out of a magazine. Very nice setup there.

That is a sweet ass desk. Where did you get it?

The large Mentos came from Hawaii the last time my wife was there. I also got a huge box of Mint ones for like, $3USD with 25 packs at the Duty Free shop on the way out of Dubai a few months back. I also picked up a bunch of Smints when I was in Heathrow. You used to be able to get Smints here, but not anymore. Not sure why.

The mouse pad is actually a Dell XPS pad that came with a XPS 410 I bought for my son about 3 years ago. The desk came from Office Max in the U.S.

Where to start. The desk was my best friends before he moved back home from Japan. It cost him about $800.00 U.S dollars here in Japan about 10 years ago. The pc is an Antec P183 case. The monitors are, LG L226WQT and a Samsung SyncMaster 206BW. Logitech Z680 5.1 surround sound. Logitech Webcam, Logitech cordless freedom 2.4 joystick, Microsoft X8 mouse, Cybersnipa game pad, Logitech wireless keyboard, Buffalo WZR-HP-G300N wired/wireless router and a Buffalo usb hard drive that acts as a NAS conected to the router.

Other than listing what parts I have in the Antec case, that should be about it.

WarBastard that desk is really snazzy. I want. :D I always like the look of Z-frame desks.

Just looking at what's available locally, Staples seems to have carried this one for a while now, based on the system in the picture...

I'm not going to defile this thread with pics of my 5' table with folding legs that I use as a desk. If I get the bug to replace it with something proper I will.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

It's not in the same league as WarBastard, but as promised (and I tidied up just for you guys!):

Image

The desk was from Staples and the black leather pod chair from Ikea. On the desk, there's the Microsoft Razer Reclusa Gaming Keyboard, Microsoft Razer Habu Gaming Mouse, 3 of the speakers from Logitech's Z5500-D (control pod and sub woofer is in the bottom right of the pic), HP 2010i Monitor, Logitech Webcam, LG External Blu-Ray/DVD-Rom Drive, iPod Touch 64GB, a plush Meerkat toy, Seagate 2.0TB external HDD and finally, the Zalman Z7-Plus PC case (the contents of that are in the sig).

Under the desk on the frosted glass shelf is a Belkin KVM (you can just about make out some of the wires going into it), and a Mac Mini living down there.

just some desk from target, my tower is too large to fit under the keyboard/mouse area so its sitting back there behind my x-530 sub.
well, decided to edit my post, the last pic was too dark and bad picture quality because tinypic rotating and resizing killed it, so these are resized in photoshop instead.
so my keyboard is a little random, being the keyboard from my Playstation 2's linux kit, paired with my logitech g3 mouse :)

the case my dad bought back in like 2002-2003ish and it become mine back in 06 or so, which besides jbi's pic in the 2nd page for his server and a job i did some photoshopping for a brief time ive never seen anyone else with the case/case type, ony difference is mine case has some old usb 1/firewire 400 controller on it with the jillions of cables to figure to hook up so its a "dead" front panel, since i dont feel like hooking those up, the back of the case has a usb2/firewire 400 pci card on it anyways :)

Well, some of us have done a thread like this before; and I've just been kind of busy... no time to post pics of the disaster zone that is my office!

But tonight, in the interest of putting off shoveling the snow for a few more minutes, here are some pics of the current state of the desk (and adjoining table) in my home office, from left to right:

Image
An old receiver and turntable (both dating back to the 1980s), used for ripping old vinyl LPs to FLAC format; a fairly old Epson scanner. As you can see, this stuff serves as additional horizontal space to pile crap on when not in use!

Image
My primary monitor and Unicomp "clicky" keyboard (IBM Model M clone). When I took the pic, the external hard drive sitting on top of the pile of papers was syncing a copy of the Ubuntu repository I brought home from work.

Image
Secondary monitor (with beer); the system I use for testing hardware and trying out different Linux distros (the drive cage sitting next to it currently has a running RAID-1 array in it); solderless breadboards with prototypes of some microcontroller circuits on them; parts cabinet containing small electronic components; and of course, more piles of random crap!

Image
Boxes and a filing cabinet containing more random crap!

My primary desktop system is under the desk (you can barely see its power LED glowing at the bottom of the second pic), and the web server that is serving the photos you're looking at is under the table (pretty much directly underneath the system with its side panel off in the third pic).

There also a closet and crawlspace with boxes of old PC components, but I won't bore you with those; they're just more piles of boxes!

I've enjoyed this thread, so I should probably take a moment to contribute...

The old Canon printer should be great, but there aren't 64-bit drivers for it, so I'm forced to transfer files "to print" to an old laptop and then print via that. Next month I'm setting up a NAS, and I'm hoping I can get the printer to work off of that, at which time it will be banished to a closet. Yes, that's my cat on the desktop (and her food on the floor next to the printer).

If there's a Linux cups driver for it (either out-of-box or from Canon) you might be able to set up a Linux VM to act as a Postscript print server that renders to it...
