LAN NAS Management

Sun Jan 02, 2011 8:13 am

Hi everyone, I'm trying to share an external drive over the network but I'm not sure how to go about it.

To give you a better idea of what I'm trying to do; I basically have an external drive that I want to share over the LAN with many different users. However, I want to have restrictions as to what each user is able to see/modify on the drive.

Currently I have a "host" machine with Win 7 Professional installed. I have the users split up into groups and I have all of these groups added to the "shared" list of the drive. Then, to restrict them from seeing some folders, I use the "NTFS" deny all permissions on the folders I don't want them to see. Whenever I have a new user, I add them to a specific group in the "share" permissions settings.

I would like to know if there is a better way to implement this because I'm not that experienced in networking tasks and I feel that this approach might become cumbersome/convoluted as the number of users increases.
