9600GT under Windows 2000?

Sat Jan 01, 2011 3:13 am

Happy New Year everyone!

I have a PCI-E eVGA 9600GT in my tower computer, which is based on an Asus P5B-E motherboard and is running Windows XP SP3. I wanted to format the hard drive and do a dual boot between Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows XP SP3 (this machine will not be connected to the Internet). However, after a fruitless search, I am unable to locate current drivers for Windows 2000 for my video card. Can I use the current Windows XP drivers for my graphics card under Windows 2000, or where should I download the drivers?

Thanks very much, I appreciate any advice.

have you considered Omega drivers?
heres a link to the 2k/xp drivers
http://www.omegadrivers.net/index.php?o ... &Itemid=90
not certain they'll work because i dont want to pop in a old hard drive to install 2k to try it, but it should, usually always works on systems that official drivers dont like.
anywho, 169 drivers are quite old, but if they work, enjoy :)
probably drinking some tea.

Thanks for the link, I may try those out! I mostly want Win2K installed as an OS to muck around in, and these might do the trick. What was the last official driver set from Nvidia that supported Windows 2000 for my card?

For Christ's sake, use a Virtual Machine, man. That's what they were invented for!

Allocate 128MB RAM for the Win2K guest and you are good to go.

Just curious - what kind of mucking are you planning to do?
There are only 10 kinds of people in this world... Those that understand binary and those that do not

Virtualbox is a definite possibility. I'll try it under my current install and see what I think of it.

As for the mucking around part, I plan to use Windows 2000 as my OS for plugging external drives and USB keys into, burning discs, sorting out data, and just basically as a test OS for software if I ever need it. I would not rule out the possibility of running older games in it. I'm a bit of a purist and would prefer to keep my Windows XP install as "clean" as possible.

This works pretty nicely (I've played Planescape Torment on a VM), just disable mouse integration while gaming - otherwise the mouse pointer can get confused. (Right click on the mouse icon at the bottom right of the VM window).

Cool, and thanks for the suggestion about Virtualbox, BlackStar! In the past, I have dabbled with Microsoft's Virtual PC software, but have never used Virtualbox. One thing I didn't care for too much with Microsoft's VPC was that they only emulated an S3 Trio64 graphics card (which, oddly enough, I owned back in 1996). Based on the reading I have done, I'm under the impression that I can do much better on the graphics end with Virtualbox.

VirtualBox will give you full OpenGL acceleration and some basic support for DirectDraw and Direct3D. It will run older games pretty well, but you'd be better served gaming on your WinXP system and using Win2K for the rest.

Another option (if you don't mind paying a few bucks) is Good Old Games, they have a lot of older games ported to modern OS's.

Wow, there are some classics on that site and a lot of games I had totally forgotten about. Thanks for posting that. It's rather timely since lately I have been playing a lot of my old DOS games under DOSBox such as Wolfenstein 3D/Spear of Destiny and NHL 97, to name a couple!

Just in case anyone else is into Win2K retro : can't remember where exactly I got it from, but probably off the ASRock site -

http://www.asrock.com/mb/download.asp?Model=N68-GS&o=2K

These 182.24 nvidia drivers work for me on an MSI 9600gt green edition card on Windows 2000 SP4 :D

Looking through the inf files, it's possible they may even support some 2XX cards ...
