Grainy DVD Playback

Thu Jan 06, 2011 8:39 pm

My problem is that all my dvd's playback in terrible quality. It's all grainy and the blacks are horrible.

I have gone through two graphics cards so I know it's not that. I am using VLC btw. If I play them on my DVD player on my tv they look fine.

Is it the media player?

Here's some screens:

Have you tried any other player software?

I notice that your screen captures are 1920x1080. You do realize that DVDs are natively 720x480 or less, don't you? Do you see any problems when you watch Blu-ray discs? They are usually 1920x1080 native.

DVD player software often has 'modes' such as: Cinema, Vibrant, Bright, Neutral. Go into options and see if your player software is set to Bright.

Mondos, if you are using VLC, update it to the latest version. Then update your graphics drivers to the latest version too. If neither works, I am not sure what to tell you.

Are your TV and monitor of the same resolution? DVD looks fine on SDTV but on high resolution monitors blowing up the pixels will definitely not look as good.

How does it look in Windows Media Player? The default Microsoft mpeg2 decoder should have proper levels, hardware acceleration and much better deinterlacing when appropriate. You can override the levels for video from the Nvidia Control Panel. Set Dynamic range to "Full (0-255)" under video color settings.

No I had the same problem with my ol' 9800GTX+.

I switched to Media player classic as well. It's a little better, but the blacks still aren't black, and text (for instance) will burn into the blacks and make a residue of them if they fade out. It's also still has a VHS tape look to it.

And I have a HDTV btw.

is that an official retail version of windows 7?
do a google search about disabling the Microsoft DTV/DVD Decoder
since you are using64, make sure you do it for both 32 and 64 registry
see if that helps

make sure to uninstall all your codec packs, including VLC
and then reinstall CCCP
you can then install the current version of VLC again if you like

Same. I know it's not my graphics card because netflix instant streams look great.

What do other sources of video look like when played through VLC? i.e. a DivX video that runs about 7MB / minute as opposed to say, 14MB / minute?

Also, Netflix is 720p/1080p if your internet is fast enough, significantly better than DVD.

Does your tv's DVD player have upconversion to 1080i/1080p?

When you said Netflix was fine, that's watching Netflix on your computer's monitor right? So it's not that your monitor is mis-calibrated?

I was wondering if this might be a codec problem.
Some time back; I had a similar problem. Downloading the K-lite codec pack (which contains every codec under the sun!) solved the problem.
Just a thought.

If resetting video color settings to their defaults doesn't fix it, open a .VOB file in Graphedit and post a screenshot.
