I'm still amazed at how much power these things eat. I'd like to get rid of at least 2 of my machines, including my main one which has become less reliable because of its extended lifespan, and replace them with something with greater output but using less power. I'm just not sure what the best idea is, not having kept up well with what's current and what's being released when.

I recently stumbled across this GeForce 200 Series article with spiffy charts on Wikipedia. Combined with the talk I seem to recall about diminishing returns with the high end cards I would probably go with a GT200b (55nm) based GeForce 260-216, if I were currently in the market. I figure a slight drop in the core clock, a considerable drop in the memory clock, and a considerable bump in the shader clock should put it right around 200 watts TDP. The additional 24 cores of the GeForce 275 might be worth the higher price. Plus a drop in the core and memory clocks should put it in the same 200 watt TDP neighborhood.

I personally hope to see "Green Econo-Boost" 40nm versions of the 250 through 285 cards once they finish making enough three billion transistor chips for those with free electricity and/or deep pockets.

i7 920 or 930
X58 mobo (Newegg often has an ASrock mobo open box for around $100)
6GB of ram

This will do more than 20K PPD.

If you want to go the videocard route I think the GT240 is the best bang for the buck/watt. It gets about 4000PPD and uses about 40 watts over the idle power draw of your PC. (100 points per watt)

OTOH, I have no idea how much electric bill damage a 4GHz i7 9xx does, but 20,000 PPD sure sounds tempting.

My system is consuming 500W right now as I type this(not including monitor). That's with the i7 920 and the GTX295 both folding. The machine is putting out around 35K PPD, maybe more I haven't been folding with this configuration long enough to know for certain, so we're looking at roughly 70 points per watt (PPW).

We certainly could use the points. Thanks for the addition. :)

My 930 is presently running at 3916 MHz (or 3906 MHz if you take cpu-z's word for it), but I haven't tried any faster yet. The new HSF is helping a great deal, but the machine is now an oven. I have to keep a window open to run it all day, which means I'll probably have to significantly downclock it in warmer months. I'm running it ~17-18 hours per day while the thermal goop finishes setting, which means no -bigadv WU's. When that's done, I'll see whether it can go faster. The main problem for the moment is the mobo doesn't seem to take my CPU voltage settings. It jumps from < 1.0 volts to over 1.35v. Even disabling, or what claims to be disabling, what I can only assume is the automatic Vdroop changes in the BIOS makes no difference. I'll be reading about the board more on EVGA's web site, and hoping for an updated BIOS.

Where is the Dr. Evil reference here?

BTW - UGN took a bit of a dip the past couple days as I was away on vacation. Had the Node off. I got back last night, and things look to be turning upwards again. I and whoever else in the UGN pumping out those 5k points per day are still hanging around.

Part of it is me, plus I totally forgot one node being down with UPS battery replacement. I have started it back up so it should be submitting WUs in a day or so.

Did you put the full -smp 24? :o A gentle reminder that if it is a work machine make sure you have permission, as described in the code of conduct.

Happy folding! What user name do you fold under so we can see your meteoric rise to the top? ;)

Yes, since I am the IT administrator and sole in-charge of the IT dept I gave myself permission to fold on the box. :P
Anyway I set the priority to idle so that it won't interfere with other processes. But as it stands the normal file server and database access the server is getting is not enough to max out 1 CPU much less 2.

My folding name is the same as my forum handle. I set SMP 12 since it really only has 12 cores would SMP 24 make a difference?

Are you also the owner paying the bills? Just don't want you being made an example of, like this guy.

kitsura wrote:My folding name is the same as my forum handle. I set SMP 12 since it really only has 12 cores would SMP 24 make a difference?
Since you have two of these processors you have a total of 24 threads available to you. Why don't you try -smp 24 and find out if there is a difference? I think 12 may be good since you are not hogging all the CPU resources in case the database needs it. It will be nice as a test to see how much faster and how many more points you can get going from 12 to 24 threads. As a reference, my i7-875K at stock 2.93GHz with -smp 8 nets me about 20k ppd for the -bigadv. With -smp 12 I would say 30k? 24 may see less improvements, so let's say 40k? :o Will be nice to have some hard data.

Currently the server rack is in a room (long story) so it's cheaper to keep it running full load than turn on the heater. Once summer rolls in i will need to turn it off since there won't be air-conditioning to keep it cool.

Did you get a chance to measure the ppd rate with both -smp 12 and -smp 24? ;)

Yes for -smp 12 it too more than 30 mins to complete a frame for about 40k ppd and -smp 24 needs 18 mins per frame for more than 70k ppd.
